Warning: Spoilers for Back in Action.
Under the joint guidance of Seth Gordon, the film titled “Back in Action” delivers a witty blend of action and humor. The narrative revolves around two ex-CIA agents, Emily (portrayed by Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx), who re-enter the world of espionage 15 years after they were thought to be deceased. About ten years ago, their superior, Chuck (Kyle Chandler), assigned them a mission to acquire the Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Key, an exceptional device that possesses the digital power to command any electronic system.
Following the retrieval of a crucial item from the residence of a former KGB agent-turned-terrorist named Balthazzar Gor (alias Robert Besta), Emily and Matt manage an escape aboard a plane. However, they soon uncover that the flight team was in Gor’s employ. Consequently, the aircraft meets with disaster, leaving them miraculously alive but assumed deceased. With the ICS Key presumed irretrievable, given these circumstances, Emily and Matt opt to sever ties with the CIA and establish their own family.
After getting married and adopting new identities, this duo has settled comfortably in a suburban neighborhood of Atlanta, raising their children Alice (McKenna Roberts) and Leo (Rylan Jackson). They’re extremely content with their lives. However, their tranquility is disrupted when an unexpected event reveals their hidden past, forcing them back into the realm they believed they had left for good.
Thanks to Their Kids, Emily and Matt’s Covers Are Blown
And Now Everyone Is Hot on Their Trail
After Alice is discovered lying about attending a nightclub with her friends, Emily and Matt unexpectedly appear at the club to escort her home. This unexpected encounter results in a heated argument, which is captured on camera and quickly spreads online. Now, it’s easy for anyone on the internet to track their location. The next morning, Chuck arrives at their house, forcing Emily and Matt to confront the consequences of their nightclub video when it becomes apparent that Gor and his gang are after them once more.
As Gor’s mercenaries gun down Chuck on their front porch, it appears he is dead. Suspecting that Emily and Matt possess the ICS Key, they become Gor’s next targets. The couple swiftly escape their home and elude Gor’s henchmen. Later, Matt confesses to Emily that he had kept the ICS Key hidden as a potential bargaining chip. To retrieve it, they must journey to England, where Matt stashed the ICS Key at the mansion of Emily’s estranged mother, Ginny (Glenn Close), who used to be an MI6 sniper.
Together with Gor’s mercenaries, Emily and Matt are chased by an MI6 squad headed by Emily’s former partner, Baron (Andrew Scott). This group suspects that the couple have returned to the game to sell the ICS Key to the most profitable buyer. With everyone tracking them down, they reach Ginny’s place. However, their fears are confirmed when Gor’s associates infiltrate the property and make off with the ICS Key, indicating that no location can be considered secure.
Chuck Was Never Killed
And He’s Actually on Gor’s Payroll
During his surprise appearance at Ginny’s property, Chuck unveils that he is very much alive. By orchestrating the whole scenario at Emily and Matt’s residence in Atlanta, he admits that he has been working for Gor all along. As retribution for being dismissed from the CIA due to the couple’s supposed demise, Chuck intends to cash in on the ICS Key himself. He abducts Alice and Leo from Ginny’s estate, but Emily and Matt manage to trace their whereabouts to a formal event at Tate Modern through Leo’s intelligent fitness tracker.
At the gathering, Emily and Matt find themselves facing off against MI6. However, upon discovering that it’s actually Chuck trying to sell the ICS Key, Baron no longer pursues the ex-CIA agents. Meanwhile, Chuck demonstrates the capabilities of the ICS Key for potential buyers, but his presentation is interrupted when Emily, Matt, and MI6 break into the room. Despite this interruption, the Thames Barrier has already been compromised and is now fully open, posing a risk of flooding the city.
Even amidst the intense gunfire, Chuck successfully escapes the area with Alice and Leo on a speedboat aimed at leaving London through an open barrier. Emily swiftly seizes another boat and catches up with them, heroically saving Alice and Leo by tossing them overboard equipped with life jackets. Meanwhile, Nigel (Jamie Demetriou) obtains the ICS Key by colliding his vehicle into Daphne’s (Jude Mack), then inexplicably manages to close the gate despite his poor IT abilities. Regrettably, the barriers ascend right as Chuck’s boat crashes and detonates.
With the ICS Key securely held by trustworthy individuals, Emily and Matt can resume their lives without worry. But following Alice’s soccer match, they encounter Baron who shares startling news: Chuck’s body was never found, implying he might still be alive. Given this situation, Baron enlists their aid in persuading a relative other than Ginny. Specifically, he requests Emily to approach her father, whom Matt had no idea existed. The movie ends and rolls credits without providing more information, leaving room for a potential sequel. Right Now: Action Resumes is available for streaming on Netflix.
