The popular TV show, “Abbott Elementary,” won’t be leaving our screens anytime soon, as it’s been officially announced that the series will come back for Season 5. Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, this ABC series focuses on the lives of teachers at an underfunded, predominantly Black public school in Philadelphia. The show made its debut with one episode in December 2021, and later returned as a mid-season replacement in January 2022. Critics have praised “Abbott Elementary,” and it has proven to be a massive success for ABC, earning four of its 24 Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe wins.
Excitedly, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned, via Deadline, that our beloved show, Abbott Elementary, is coming back for Season 5! The official Instagram page of the series released a heartwarming video, where the child actors who play our favorite students count up to five, revealing the series renewal. You can check it out below. This fantastic news makes Abbott Elementary the first ABC series to secure its place on the 2025-26 schedule, continuing a tradition of early renewals that we’ve grown to appreciate.
The renewal is linked to a special episode that crossed over with FXX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” This unique episode garnered a total of 8.05 million views across various platforms, setting a new series record (except for the show’s post-Oscars episode last season). Interestingly, the special episode also recorded an all-time high for “Abbott Elementary” in terms of streaming views during its first seven days on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. This is noteworthy as many people living in Los Angeles County were likely forced to stream the episode due to the California Wildfires disrupting regular TV broadcasts, pushing the episode out of its original time slot for continuous news coverage. The “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” segment within the “Abbott Elementary” crossover will serve as the series premiere for Season 17, although a specific release date has yet to be announced.
‘Abbott Elementary’ Continued Popularity
The TV show “Abbott Elementary” has won a special place in ABC viewers’ hearts, despite facing numerous scheduling hurdles not of its own making. For instance, Season 1 was a mid-season replacement with just 13 episodes, while Season 2 received a full 22-episode order. However, Season 3 was cut short to 14 episodes due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, which caused a delay and required the show’s writers to account for this time gap. Fortunately, Season 4 will consist of a complete 22 episodes, unless some unexpected event occurs. Under normal circumstances, we can expect Season 5 of “Abbott Elementary” to also have 22 episodes, providing an optimal number for airing in syndication.
2025 has been a challenging year for numerous individuals, marked by events such as the California wildfires, the passing of David Lynch, and the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidency. Since his inauguration, Trump has implemented several executive orders, some of which include an effort to abolish birthright citizenship, withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, and a controversial policy regarding transgender individuals that asserts the recognition of only two genders, male and female. The current state of affairs is far from ideal. While Abbott Elementary resuming for Season 5 won’t solve any problems, it may offer a glimmer of hope to help brighten an otherwise dismal day.
