Jamie Lee Curtis, a widely recognized actress, boasts just one Oscar nomination to her name, despite her extensive Hollywood career and iconic status. It’s astonishing that, amidst all her accomplishments, she’s only been nominated, and won, once by the Academy. What makes it even more surprising is that Questlove predicted she would win the award on that particular night when others doubted her chances for her hilarious performance in the everything bagel-filled alternate universe.
Curtis recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for a discussion about her upcoming films slated for release in 2025, including “The Last Showgirl” and “Freakier Friday”. During the conversation, she reminisced about the impact of her 2022 movie, “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, and shared insights into her journey to success with that film. She highlighted the movie’s unique quality that makes it worth rewatching multiple times. Additionally, she mentioned an interesting encounter at a screening and reception in NYC where she spotted Questlove in attendance. In her own words:
In this fantastic movie titled Everything Everywhere All at Once, I had the pleasure of watching, and I must say that Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan delivered exceptional performances. The movie was terrific, as were the Daniels behind it. I even had a small but great part in it. However, I never gave much thought to my role. I attended a screening in New York City, truth be told, and Questlove was among the audience. At the end of the movie, there was a gathering, which took place during Covid times, and I found the idea of attending such an event, called a reception, rather unappealing due to potential germ exposure from high voices and wine breath.
Her straightforward approach and simple explanations about working on the film, experiencing it with a live audience, and the ensuing response are simply spot-on. The former star of Freaky Friday lays everything bare, just as she always does, even when not receiving accolades; this was evident when Curtis’ unexpectedly emotional Oscar win impressed even The Roots’ drummer.
After the actress from “True Lies” was made aware, she agreed with Questlove’s insightful forecast, which ultimately convinced her that such a thing could indeed become reality.
Instead, let me tell you this: I wasn’t far from the entrance, and Questlove was there. Just about to depart, I turned, and there he was. Puzzled, I looked at him, and he said something I hadn’t heard before – we hadn’t met before. He told me, “Brush off your shoulders.” Taken aback, I replied, “What?” Again, he said, “Brush off your shoulders.” In disbelief, I retorted, “Oh, please stop!” … What struck me then was that I found myself saying, “What?” Just like Leonard Cohen mentioned the crack that let the light in, you were that crack for me. Truth be told, I never imagined this would happen, and on the night itself, I didn’t think it would either. But Questlove had predicted it, and I will always remember it as long as I live.
As a movie enthusiast, let me tell you, the plot between those two characters was nothing short of wild! And boy, did the drummer for The Tonight Show have amazing intuition. We all knew it was just a matter of time before he made his pick – but who could have guessed it’d be the one with her wearing hot dog fingers? The Daniels film truly earned every bit of attention and success it received that year, with an exceptional cast and crew to boot.
Tales with amazing conclusions, such as winning an Oscar, become even more captivating when they happen. The extraordinary story of Questlove foreseeing Jamie Lee Curtis’s victory in Everything Everywhere All at Once is simply astonishing.
Experience Jamie Lee Curtis as she shines in her Academy Award-winning performance from “Everything Everywhere All At Once”. Meanwhile, catch “The Last Showgirl” on stage in cinemas currently.
