Enthusiasts of the much-loved series have finally received the long-awaited update – the revival of their beloved franchise will be hitting the big screen in 2025! While a specific release date for this long-anticipated premiere hasn’t been set yet, we’ll take any positive news, won’t we?
For years now, “The Toxic Avenger” has been a source of frustration among moviegoers. However, the director has recently confirmed that the film will not be abandoned and forgotten, as some had begun to suspect. In fact, he announced exciting news that we can look forward to seeing Toxie back on the big screen this year! According to Variety, Blair stated:
I am incredibly thankful to the team behind The Toxic Avenger who were consistently helpful and skilled as we sought a suitable distributor for our film. It’s thrilling that audiences will get to experience this in theaters, it’s a lively, rambunctious movie best enjoyed with a crowd. The mutant hero demolishes villains with a mop: ideal family entertainment! Our aim was always to maintain the essence and soul of the original Toxie (which I remember vividly from my youth) and create something that Troma enthusiasts would appreciate, while also offering something new and exciting. Working with Lloyd and Michael at Troma has been a pleasure, everyone at Legendary is outstanding, and I can’t wait to collaborate with the talented team at Cinverse to share this interpretation of Toxie with both old and new fans.
‘The Toxic Avenger’ Will Debut in 2025 After a Long Journey
It’s taken over a decade for Troma Entertainment’s cult favorite to make its comeback, with the project undergoing significant changes since it was initially announced in 2010. Originally conceived as a PG-13 adaptation of The Toxic Crusaders featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie has morphed into an unbridled, gory spectacle that harkens back to Troma Entertainment’s bloody and gruesome roots in the late 70s and 80s.
2019 marked the debut of this particular version of the project, with Blair taking on the director’s role under the backing of Lloyd Kaufman from Troma. Kaufman expressed that Blair understands Troma more profoundly than he does himself. He was confident that the script for the film surpassed the original, and was content to let Blair take the lead. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, and Taylour Paige.
Initially, due to delays caused by the Covid pandemic, filming took a while to commence. However, production was completed by August 2021. The movie didn’t hit the screens until September 2023 at Fantastic Fest, where it received an impressive 92% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, finding a distributor has been challenging for this film, with some speculating that its unconventional nature makes it too risky for many to handle, particularly in the era of the Poohniverse!
It appears now that the concerns about “The Toxic Avenger” getting swallowed by a black hole have been put to rest, and while we’re yet to get a specific release date, it seems the movie will be coming out soon at last.
