Anurag Kashyap wrote a lengthy appreciation post about Jaideep Ahlawat’s latest series, Paatal Lok Season 2. Sharing multiple clips from the show, he began his review by echoing the words of the renowned South Korean director in his Parasite acceptance speech when he said, “Break through the small hurdle of subtitles and you will discover countless other fantastic films.”

Anurag Kashyap acknowledged that while they were proud of Sacred Games, another series called Pataal Lok, produced by Sudip Sharma and Avinash Arundhare, was put aside. He considered it exceptional in terms of writing, direction, and acting, and believed it couldn’t be surpassed. However, he added that 2025 began with the release of Black Warrant and the bar was already high. He mentioned that the second season of Pataal Lok would follow soon after.

The director disclosed that he’s been altering his schedule to retire early at night. He mentioned that instead of feeling drowsy, he unexpectedly watched the first episode of the new season. “Jonathan Thom’s body discovery in the opening scene snatched any remaining sleep I had, and I was instantly drawn into Hathi Ram Choudhary’s world, as if sinking into quicksand,” he continued. “The dark corners of humanity that he explores, constantly seeking hope that may or may not arrive, left him.

Kashyap pointed out that this series is a suspenseful tale, wrapped in an enigma, and it’s set in a place that we all recognize yet often overlook. He praised the powerful writing for its uncompromising honesty, reflecting the hidden hypocrisy that exists among us as a community.

The director strongly encouraged viewers to watch the series with subtitles to fully appreciate its authenticity, bold creativity, and exceptional acting. He confessed that the unexpected climax left him in tears because he had yearned for it, yet it took him by surprise.

The actor portraying Maharaj extended his praise for the cast in the comments area. Regarding Jaideep Ahlawat, he stated that this wasn’t just his finest performance yet, but the standout performance of 2020 by any actor I have seen. Ahlawat doesn’t merely act; instead, he becomes Hathiram Choudhary. It’s a remarkable demonstration of acting skill that leaves me speechless.
