Following the portrayal of vampires through the lens of Nosferatu, the talented director Robert Eggers now delves into a unique interpretation of the horror monster genre.
Eggers, along with another writer, has contributed to the script of “Werwulf,” a chilling horror story about werewolves. This will be his upcoming directorial project.
Concentrating again on business matters, Focus Features – Universal’s art-focused division that brought us the classic movie Nosferatu – is teaming up with the filmmaker for Werwulf. The company has scheduled this chilling thriller to be released in North America on Christmas Day 2026, mirroring the release date of its predecessor Nosferatu which unexpectedly became a success. Here’s hoping that they’ll receive even more festive cheer as they did with Nosferatu!
Eggers collaborated with Sjón on the novel “Werwulf.” This author, who jointly penned the weighty Viking saga “The Northman” with a filmmaker, is the partner in this project. Although specifics are limited, reports indicate that the narrative unfolds in 13th century England. The script incorporates dialogue authentic to the era and provides translations and annotations for readers who might be unfamiliar with Old English.
At first, Eggers intended to film the movie in black and white, but he’s changed his mind about that now.
Without a doubt, Eggers appears to be preparing us for another immersion into a gritty, costume-filled era marked by violence, fitting well within his body of work that has cultivated a devoted movie audience.
Both Eggers and Sjón are collaborating on a project with Focus Features. Chris and Eleanor Columbus, who previously worked with Eggers on “Nosferatu”, will serve as executive producers for this project.
Peter Kujawski’s company, Focus, has collaborated with filmmaker Robert Eggers on all his projects, including “Northman” and earlier works such as “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse.” For the distribution of “The Lighthouse,” Focus worked through Universal International on an international scale.
Nosferatu represented Eggers’ modern adaptation of the 1922 film titled similarly, which bore resemblance to Dracula. The film featured Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult as a couple under attack by Count Orlok, portrayed by Bill Skarsgard. Additionally, it included Willem Dafoe, who has appeared in nearly all of Eggers’ films, along with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The story unfolded in a German seaport during the 1830s.
The film, characterized by its atmospheric feel, artistic aesthetic, elaborate costumes, and dialogues that lean towards the formal, premiered on Christmas Day. It managed a strong start, earning $40 million in its first five days, surpassing industry predictions twice over. To date, it has grossed over $156 million globally, making it director Eggers’ most successful film so far. The movie will be available for digital and physical purchase on February 18th.
Eggers is repped by WME and Frankfurt Kurnit.
