Mikey Madison Deserves an Oscar Nomination for ‘Anora’ – A Comedy with Heart

The Awards Season has officially kicked off, and with the Golden Globe winners setting some trends, it feels like we’re getting closer to who might take home the big prizes at other ceremonies. However, the Oscars are known for being a more competitive race, mainly because there are fewer categories compared to the Globes. I’ve been making an effort to catch up on the major films that have been raking in nominations, and one that I finally got around to watching is Sean Baker’s Anora. If actress Mikey Madison doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination, I might just lose it!

In simpler terms, “Anora” is considered one of the top comedies in 2024, but it also includes some intense dramatic scenes towards the end. I watched this movie through my Amazon Prime subscription and was thoroughly engrossed by Madison’s performance as the main character, a stripper and escort. Her humor (particularly her accent) was side-splitting, she performed some stunts, and she delivered an emotional punch in the climax. Given her exceptional performance, I believe she is certainly worthy of being nominated for Best Actress at the 2025 Academy Awards.

For several years, the influence of Madison has been on an upward trajectory. Her impressive performances include portraying a murderer in “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and assuming the role of Ghostface in this year’s “Scream” film, which is available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription.

In the series Anora, Mikey Madison played the leading role, truly excelling as the main character. Interestingly, during an interview with this 25-year-old actress, her demeanor was quite different from Anora’s bold and unreserved character portrayed in the dramedy.

Irrespective of whether or not Madison gets an Academy Award nomination tomorrow, Anora appears to be a breakout role for her. For instance, she’s now among the names fans speculate could play a Bond Girl in the upcoming 007 film. Moreover, if she manages to secure her first Oscar nod, there’s a strong possibility she’ll move up a few spots on that list.

This year’s Oscars competition is unusual because there doesn’t seem to be a clear favorite or universal set of nominees. Demi Moore is currently favored in the Best Actress category, but it remains to be seen if the Academy will acknowledge her work in the horror film “The Substance”. Competition for an Oscar nomination could be stiff for Mikey Madison, as potential opponents include Pamela Anderson for “The Last Showgirl”, Cynthia Erivo in “Wicked”, Fernanda Torres in “I’m Still Here”, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste in “Hard Truths”. However, other contenders for these coveted nominations could be Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña for “Emilia Pérez” and Kate Winslet for “Lee”, among others.

Time alone will reveal the outcome, but rest assured, Anora is certainly a must-see. As we anticipate the nominations, take a look at the upcoming movie releases in 2025.
