Spoilers are ahead for Episode 10 of Chicago Med Season 10 on NBC, called “Broken Hearts.”
In the 2025 TV lineup, Chicago Med returns with “Broken Hearts” as its premiere episode following the resolution of Sharon Goodwin’s cliffhanger after she was stabbed. Archer played a crucial role in saving Goodwin during the winter premiere, yet he wasn’t particularly fond of his patient this time around: Sloan, a wealthy and demanding executive who has a habit of burning bridges. When her medical condition proved to be far more severe than initially thought, Archer became acquainted with her assistant, Meg, and apparently had an epiphany about life that, as per Steven Weber, will have lasting implications for him in future episodes.
And nobody even had to die for the message to hit home for Archer, or even be stabbed a la Goodwin!
What Happened To Archer In Chicago Med’s Latest Episode
Initially, Sloan was extremely difficult to deal with. However, upon receiving news of her possible mortality, she transformed into a different kind of challenging person, as she attempted to compensate those she had mistreated. This change took place in the presence of many individuals whom she had wronged. Meg, who once referred to her boss as a “madman” solely for career advancement opportunities, was initially heartened by Sloan’s apparent change of heart. Yet, this transformation proved temporary as Sloan soon reverted to her old ways following her recovery.
Meg made it clear that she was leaving, and in doing so, subtly hinted at some past issues involving payments to certain individuals who didn’t seem to care about her well-being. This resonated deeply with Archer, who has been known for his harsh demeanor throughout the years. (You can catch up on his earlier episodes by subscribing to Peacock.) I have a feeling that he might find himself reflecting on the conversation they had, where she questioned the motivations behind people’s changes. When Meg inquired about why people alter their paths, Archer replied:
If a clear moment reveals a more fulfilling path for your life, instead of questioning much, seize the opportunity and move swiftly towards it without looking back.
After receiving a stark reminder following the apparent neglect of Sloan’s condition which could have been fatal, can Archer apply his own counsel? While I believe he wasn’t as unscrupulous as Sloan, even at his most problematic on Chicago Med, it is undeniable that he didn’t win over many of his colleagues early in the game.
In addition to discussing Archer’s unconventional partnership with Hannah, as well as hinting at a “Chicago-set rendition of Avengers: Endgame,” Steven Weber shared more insights with TopMob.
Steven Weber Pondering His Mortality
During my chat with Steven Weber for NBC’s One Chicago winter premiere event, he gave a sneak peek into Archer’s storyline following the Goodwin stabbing incident. Initially, I wasn’t quite sure how his remarks would tie in with Season 10 based solely on the winter premiere events, but they became much clearer after observing Meg’s outburst concerning Sloan’s legacy. He explained:
As a cinephile moving forward, the winter premiere cliffhanger and the subsequent events have led me to question my life choices, not just about staying or leaving, but about my overall direction. This man, who has been through so much – self-loathing, damage, repair, and more – is now contemplating the meaning of it all. He’s pondering mortality and his role in this world, despite his desire to escape it. It’s not just a character guiding him or helping him decide; it’s the world itself that seems to be influencing him, compelling him to stay and face whatever lies ahead.
In the premiere of 2025, Goodwin persuaded him to remain at work despite his decision to leave following a demotion under Lenox. However, the storyline wasn’t fully resolved when that discussion was revisited in the “Recap” segment for Episode 10, indicating there’s more to come. Archer grappled with contemplating his mortality after witnessing Sloan’s reaction to hers, and it appears this theme will continue throughout the season. Interestingly, Archer isn’t alone in dealing with an ongoing storyline, as other characters are also facing similar arcs.
In essence, it’s not just about Archer; every character in this hospital series has their own unique journey woven into the narrative. This means that fresh stories will continually walk through the doors of Gaffney, as there will always be individuals requiring assistance. However, while following Archer’s path is significant, we’ll also get to witness the evolutions of all other characters. Our talented writers ensure that these are not mere cardboard cutouts but fully-fledged characters whom the audience cares deeply for. So, expect more than just Archer’s arc; anticipate a captivating journey for everyone involved.
For the character arcs in Chicago Med‘s Season 10 to fully unfold as per Steven Weber’s remarks, we might need to be patient until February. But don’t worry, there’s a fun twist! The three-show crossover of One Chicago will air first on January 29, starting with Chicago Fire at 8 p.m. ET in the usual time slot for Med, followed by Chicago Med at 9 p.m. ET and wrapping up with Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET, all airing on NBC.
