Excitedly, I find myself on the verge of setting sail with the iconic Ocean’s crew! It seems that action maestro, David Leitch, is reportedly in discussions to direct Ocean’s 14, the next installment of this beloved series. This upcoming adventure will be the first Ocean’s film without Steven Soderbergh at the helm, but fear not, as George Clooney will return as Danny Ocean and lend his producer skills too!
This latest news is thrilling for followers of Leitch’s creative endeavors and the series itself, considering his past achievements in directing high-octane films such as “John Wick”, “Atomic Blonde”, “Deadpool 2”, and “The Fall Guy”, featuring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Notably, “The Fall Guy” held a special significance for the director, given his history as a stuntman, often working alongside Pitt, before transitioning into directing. Leitch also helmed the chaotic “Bullet Train”, where Pitt played the unfortunate assassin Ladybug. Although unofficial, there are expectations that Pitt will reprise his role in the “Ocean’s” franchise as Rusty Ryan.
In 2023, Clooney teased the upcoming project, sharing:
As a devoted enthusiast, I am thrilled to share that we’ve got an exceptionally captivating script for another Ocean’s installment. If all goes well, you might see us diving back into this project. Let me assure you, it’s not just good – it’s great!
Clooney hinted that the forthcoming movie featuring Danny and his team won’t reveal its plot specifics, but he mentioned it would follow the humorous tone of the 1979 heist comedy “Going in Style.” In this film, three elderly companions plotted and carried out a bank robbery, with George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg playing the leads.
Pitt and Clooney worked together in the Ocean’s series, with their latest collaboration being Ocean’s 13 released in 2007. This film came after Ocean’s 11 (2001) and Ocean’s 12 (2004). Alongside them, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Andy García, Don Cheadle, Ellen Barkin, the late Bernie Mac, and Al Pacino were also part of this star-studded cast. Last year, during an interview, Damon mentioned that he and Affleck are open to reprising their roles in future installments.
A New Direction for ‘Ocean’s 14’
If you’ve been keeping up with ocean-related news, it wouldn’t come as a surprise that Soderbergh is not returning. Last year, the renowned director himself announced:
Following the release of the third film, Soderbergh expressed that the series seemed finalized to him. When the studio proposed the idea of his involvement in extending the franchise, he declined as it didn’t seem like progress for him. Instead, he’s pursuing other creative endeavors.
In a different turn of events, there was an Ocean’s project that didn’t involve Soderbergh – the 2018 spin-off titled Ocean’s 8. This film featured Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter, with Gary Ross as director. Unfortunately, no sequels emerged from Ocean’s 8, showcasing the talented ensemble cast. It would be delightful to see some of these stars team up with the original crew and combine both casts.
In addition to “Ocean’s 14,” another upcoming film delves into the Ocean family saga. Known for their roles in “Barbie,” Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, star in this prequel titled “Oceans.” The movie, directed by Jay Roach, takes place in the 1960s and features these two actors as Danny’s parents.
Initially, The Insider broke the news about potential participation of Leitch in the Ocean’s film. Later on, various media outlets validated this report. If this collaboration materializes, it will mark Leitch’s fourth upcoming project, with Button Man, Hot Air, and Undying Love also on his list.
