Fans of the MonsterVerse are in for a treat, as we approach its 10th anniversary! With Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on the horizon and more spinoffs coming to Apple TV+, the excitement doesn’t stop there. A sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, titled “The New Empire II”, is set for release in spring 2027. However, today brings a mix of good and concerning news regarding the sixth MonsterVerse movie – first castings have been announced, yet some developments about this installment leave me somewhat apprehensive.
Kaitlyn Dever Is Being Lined Up For The Godzilla X Kong Sequel
As reported by Deadline, Kaitlyn Dever is in talks to join the upcoming sequel of Godzilla x Kong. The specific character she would portray remains undisclosed at this time. With a diverse range of credits including films like Booksmart, Dear Evan Hansen, Ticket to Paradise, and No One Will Save You, as well as TV shows such as Justified and Last Man Standing, Dever has demonstrated versatility across various genres. In addition, her role as Abby in The Last of Us Season 2, set to premiere on HBO in April, will further solidify her presence in the science fiction genre in the coming years.
Humans Will Reportedly Have A Bigger Role In The Sequel
I’m thrilled to learn that Kaitlyn Dever is joining the cast of the Godzilla x Kong sequel, as it’s long overdue for her to be part of a big-scale production. However, what particularly piqued my interest from Deadline’s report is that Legendary, the production company responsible for the MonsterVerse series, intends to develop its human characters more extensively. In fact, the new film aims to blend character-focused storytelling with its signature grand scale and Titan combat action, as envisioned by director Grant Sputore, who takes over from Adam Wingard.
I don’t fit into the category of people who have issues with human characters in MonsterVerse films or series. To be candid, I’m skeptical about a movie that focuses solely on Titans, especially when it comes to filling a 2-hour runtime. However, let’s face it, viewers aren’t attending MonsterVerse movies for outstanding character development. They’re there to witness gigantic monsters engaging in combat, disregarding the destruction they cause among humans unintentionally.
I’m not advocating for neglecting the need to make the human characters in MonsterVerse films unique, but it gives me pause when I hear that the sequel to Godzilla and Kong is leaning heavily on them. I hope this doesn’t mean the focus on Godzilla and Kong themselves will suffer as a result. It’s fine to explore characterization extensively in a TV series like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, given its longer runtime and reduced emphasis on Titans. However, striking a balance in a feature film is crucial, especially for a big-budget production like this one.
The follow-up to the epic battle between Godzilla and Kong is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2027. In the meantime, stream their five previous cinematic encounters with a Max subscription to keep up with this titanic series.
