For four seasons now, “The Boys” has captivated and appalled viewers as one of the finest sci-fi series available on Amazon Prime. Regrettably, this incredible journey is set to conclude in 2025 (or whenever Season 5 premieres). The casting throughout these five years has been nothing short of remarkable, propelling actors such as Jack Quaid into stardom (it seems like he’s in almost every movie scheduled for 2025!) and attracting talent like Giancarlo Esposito and Jensen Ackles to play significant roles. Interestingly enough, it was also revealed that Sterling K. Brown was once offered a role on the series. I have a theory about which character he might have been considered for.
Sterling K. Brown Talks Turning Down A Role On The Boys
Sterling K. Brown has delivered outstanding performances throughout his career, winning three Emmys for various projects such as ‘This Is Us’ on NBC and ‘American Fiction’. He also earned an Academy Award nomination. Due to these accomplishments, Brown now has the luxury of being choosy about the roles he takes. In an interview with Variety, he mentioned that he declined a part in ‘The Boys’. The actor stated:
I find myself drawn towards that role, as the allure was undeniable. However, spending a full season in Toronto presents its own set of challenges. To put it simply, these are luxury issues I’m referring to. Yet, being fortunate enough to have established foundations, I am afforded the opportunity to exercise a bit more discernment.
Sterling K. Brown expressed deep sadness about turning down an opportunity to collaborate with Eric Kripke once more, having starred in four episodes of Supernatural before. While I’d be overjoyed to express excitement for the actor finding himself in such a fortunate situation, it’s truly disheartening instead. The intriguing question now is: Which role was Brown offered?
Could Sterling K. Brown Have Been Offered The Role Of Joe Kessler?
In a more casual and understandable way, the sentence could be rephrased as: “Randall from ‘This Is Us’ is such a sweetheart, but Sterling K. Brown might have enjoyed playing a villain instead, and there are certainly enough of those on ‘The Boys’. Since he mentioned it being a long-term storyline, I can’t help but wonder if he was given the chance to play Joe Kessler – a role that ended up going to Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
In case you’ve forgotten the significant reveal from Season 4’s “Dirty Business” – which you can rewatch with an Amazon Prime subscription if you wish, though I’m going to disclose it here regardless – we discovered that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character had actually passed away years ago. Instead, throughout the entire season, Butcher (played by Karl Urban) was embodying a figment of his conscience, much like Becca’s spirit represented an angelic presence for Butcher. It bore a resemblance to “Fight Club” in its narrative twist, yet it was still impactful and well-executed.
I find Sterling K. Brown perfectly suited for that part, but if Jeffrey Dean Morgan wasn’t chosen to play the antagonist instead, I wouldn’t be too upset since he brought such an enticing performance to the table.
There’s a chance that my assumption might not hold up. The exact season Brown was offered his role isn’t explicitly stated, so it’s possible he played a different character altogether. I don’t necessarily think Jensen Ackles would have been Soldier Boy, but he could fit the mold for Giancarlo Esposito’s Stan Edgar or even a government official like Claudia Doumit’s Victoria Neuman (Rest in Peace). These characters have appeared across multiple seasons, not just one.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that things seem to have worked out splendidly for everyone concerned, as we approach the fifth and final season of “The Boys”. Remarkably, Sterling K. Brown is once again joining forces with Dan Fogelman, the genius behind “This Is Us”. The highly-anticipated series titled “Paradise” will be available to stream on Hulu from Tuesday, January 28. I can hardly wait!
