The preliminary series to NCIS, titled NCIS: Origins, took a midseason pause in December, delivering an epic episode that unveiled how Leroy Jethro Gibbs became associated with the NCIS. This month, we’re picking up where we left off with the first season of this series, airing simultaneously with the usual NCIS, offering viewers additional thrilling crime-solving adventures.
The series titled “NCIS: Origins” is set in the year 1991, which is a decade and a half prior to the events depicted in “NCIS“. In this show, Mark Harmon portrays an older Leroy Jethro Gibbs, while Austin Stowell takes on the role of the younger Gibbs. Kyle Schmid plays a young Mike Franks, and Mariel Molino, Lori Petty, Bobby Moynihan, and others introduce new characters to the “NCIS” universe.
How Many Episodes Will ‘NCIS: Origins’ Have?
The first season of NCIS: Origins began in October 2024, but it took a hiatus in December. However, the series is set to return with eight additional episodes starting on Monday, January 27th. Where the Season Left Off
The initial season of NCIS: Origins concluded with the 10th episode, titled “Blue Bayou.” In this installment, the narrative largely unfolded through flashbacks, showcasing an unforeseen bond between Gibbs and his apartment manager, Ruth. Both characters have complex family histories, which they confide in each other. It was Ruth who encouraged Gibbs to join the Naval Investigative Service (still not known as NCIS at this point), and it was again Ruth who persuaded Mike Franks to enlist Gibbs on his team.
In the ninth episode of NCIS: Origins titled “Blue Bayou”, a key plot point from earlier in the season gets resolved as evidence suggests that Gibbs may have killed drug cartel leader Pedro Hernandez. Previously hinted at in early seasons, the episode confirms that Gibbs indeed took Hernandez’s life, with Gibbs confessing this to Ruth. Additionally, “Blue Bayou” unveils why Gibbs failed his psychological evaluation – a point of curiosity throughout NCIS: Origins. It turns out that it wasn’t due to the trauma from losing his wife and daughter, but rather because he learned about Ruth’s terminal cancer diagnosis.
This episode deviates from the typical crime-centered narrative found in most NCIS series, as it primarily explores events preceding Gibbs’s involvement with the NIS. This unusual absence of a crime is unique within the NCIS franchise, but it provides an insightful glimpse into the early stages of Gibbs’s extensive career with NCIS. Future episodes in the last part of the season might adopt this crime-free style to set the show apart from other franchise installments.
As NCIS resumes, viewers should recall that Gibbs was nurturing a deeper bond with fellow NIS agent Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino). Over the course of their partnership, a temporary rift in trust occurred and was mended by the end of episode 10. Although Dominguez is not mentioned again within NCIS, she becomes instrumental in Gibbs’s life, as an elderly Gibbs discloses at the onset of season one that NCIS: Origins centers around her tale. The ensuing season one episodes are likely to delve further into Gibbs and Dominguez’s relationship and perhaps shed light on why NCIS never refers to her.
‘NCIS: Origins’ Offers Fans a Beloved Character’s Backstory
Following Mark Harmon’s departure from portraying Leroy Jethro Gibbs in season 19 of NCIS, numerous fans were left saddened due to Gibbs being a beloved character since the first season. However, the arrival of NCIS: Origins offered comfort as it reintroduced Harmon to his role, this time narrating the tale of how Leroy Jethro Gibbs joined the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
NCIS: Origins delves into Gibbs’s early career with the NCIS, much like other standard NCIS series where episodes typically revolve around special agents resolving cases. Yet, the series also carves out opportunities to explore character development, providing viewers with insights into Gibbs’s personal life and background.
In the prequel series NCIS: Origins, we find Gibbs beginning his career as a green agent. However, viewers are already privy to the fact that he’ll eventually ascend to a leadership role within NCIS. The show unfolds with Gibbs learning to collaborate with fellow agents and build self-assurance. It also includes poignant scenes, frequently featuring flashbacks to the tragic car accident that claimed the lives of his wife and daughter prior to the series timeline.
In addition to Gibbs, other well-known characters from NCIS are also present. The series presents other special agents who later appear in NCIS, like Gibbs’s partner Mike Franks and Vera Strickland. Moreover, Gibbs’s father is seen several times in NCIS: Origins, which provides a glimpse into their strained relationship before they eventually reconcile in NCIS.
