Sara Bareilles, a seasoned performer with a Grammy under her belt, isn’t usually ruffled. Yet, the Celebrating Sundance Institute fundraiser at Park City’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley on Friday night seemed to shake things up for her.
As she stepped into the grand ballroom to bring the glamorous evening to a close, Bareilles confessed that it was this elegant room itself that made her feelings of nervousness intensify. The charity event featured an impressive lineup of honorees and speakers such as James Mangold, director of “A Complete Unknown”, Cynthia Erivo from “Wicked”, Michelle Satter of the Sundance Institute, Glenn Close, Joel Edgerton, Marielle Heller, R.J. Cutler, and Tessa Thompson. Notable attendees moving about included Jon Hamm, Boots Riley, Kimberly Peirce, Roger Ross Williams, among others.
Perhaps it was due to the deep connection she has with this year’s film at Sundance, as Bareilles serves as an executive producer for Ryan White’s new documentary titled “Come See Me in the Good Light“. This documentary chronicles the lives of two poets, Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley, as they navigate a humorous and emotional journey through love, life, and mortality when one of them is diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer.
Sara Bareilles collaborated on a song titled “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet” with Andrea Gibson and Brandi Carlile for the movie of the same name. She then graced the stage for the world premiere of this track, as part of a two-song performance that concluded the event. Additionally, she performed “She Used to Be Mine,” a popular number from her Broadway musical “Waitress.
See clips of both performances below.
Tonight at the #Sundance Institute gala, I was thrilled to witness Sara Bareilles bring down the house with an exclusive, first-time performance of “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet”. This powerful track can be found in the documentary Come See Me in the Good Light, one of the festival’s selections. What makes it even more special is that she collaborated on its creation with Andrea Gibson and Brandi Carlile.
