Back in November 2024, I, Drake, took a stand against the Universal Music Group. I filed two complaints – one in New York City and another in Texas. In the first one, I accused UMG of colluding with Spotify, the popular music streaming platform. The second complaint was directed solely at UMG.
However, I decided to withdraw my petition in New York, paving the way for a full-blown lawsuit. But, I’m keeping the petition in Texas alive and active. Let’s see how this unfolds!
Following this development, Universal Music Group (UMG) has submitted a request to discard the petition in Texas. The music corporation is presenting its case in a 144-page document, claiming it’s shielded by free speech protections. According to Variety’s review of the filing, UMG contends that the Texas Citizens Participation Action safeguards them from lawsuits intended to suppress or intimidate on matters of public concern. UMG alleges that Drake’s petition, filed under Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 202, is a tactic meant to intimidate and penalize individuals for exercising their First Amendment rights.
In simpler terms, UMG argues in their motion that Drake must supply solid proof for his allegations, especially the one about UMG using a “pay-to-play” scheme with iHeartMedia. UMG contends that Drake lacks sufficient evidence and is asking for the case to be dismissed because he hasn’t provided any supporting documents beyond his initial petition.
The motion also criticizes Drake’s sources from the original petition as unreliable, stating they are unidentified and their statements are not admissible in court. UMG wants the whole case dropped and for all further investigations related to it to be put on hold. Additionally, UMG is asking Drake to cover their legal fees and expenses associated with defending against these claims.
