Yet, Peter is not one to back down easily. He clings fiercely to his dream and the opportunity to demonstrate his worthiness.

Apart from her personal trauma, there’s another reason Catherine lacks confidence in Peter. In a flashback, we see that when she was a field agent herself, her partner died, and she nearly met the same fate. However, she managed to apprehend the assailant. Interestingly, the then director, played by Robert Patrick reprising his role as Jamie Hawkins, instructed her to continue investigating the case. The case involved an FBI mole named Peter Sutherland, who happened to be Peter’s father.

Why Catherine Is the Best Character in ‘The Night Agent‘ Season 2

In the course of the series, Catherine exhibits various aspects of her personality. However, her tough demeanor and unemotional demeanor conceal a heart full of compassion for others. She proves to be a far superior mentor to Peter compared to Diane Farr (Hong Chau), who ultimately betrayed him. When Catherine gets Alice’s (Brittany Snow) ashes, she takes them to her cousin. There, she discovers that Alice broke off all ties with her family when she joined Night Action, which was a condition of the job. Unfortunately, this meant he didn’t know her well and decided not to keep her ashes, sending them back instead.

Beyond feeling sorrowful about the demise of one of her closest agents, whom she also regarded as a friend, Catherine takes it upon herself to reprimand her superior during a dinner outing with his spouse. Her objective is to emphasize his neglect towards the individuals who risk their lives and sacrifice everything for their work. She aims to ensure that Alice’s memory endures and her contributions were not wasted. Later on, she scatters Alice’s ashes into the ocean from a pier that held significant meaning for Alice – one of her preferred gathering spots.

She’s not only strategically astute but also an unyielding combatant. Even though she no longer works in that field, she has proven on numerous occasions that she retains the abilities for it. For instance, in a flashback, she employed a rosary cross from her pocket to blind a man by gouging his eye out.

The scene that leaves the biggest impact, featuring Catherine, occurs when she swiftly turns to disarm Solomon by knocking a gun from his grasp. Her powerful kicks aimed at his abdomen reveal her extensive martial arts background. These blows are so intense they send him tumbling backwards into a jutting pipe, which fatally pierces his stomach. However, it’s crucial to note that Catherine doesn’t let Peter’s doubts about her affect her. By rescuing Rose, accepting Rose into their mission, and collaborating on some of Peter’s ideas, she shows her ability to set aside her own feelings and prove herself trustworthy to him. She hopes he will reach his conclusions after getting to know her better, and her concerns are more about him than his concerns about her.

Catherine consistently shows understanding and support towards Peter, standing by him even when she felt he wasn’t prepared. Even in situations where he acted rebelliously, causing her distress as she had to track him down, she responded with firmness but also extended mercy. In the end, though she ensured that justice was carried out and he faced consequences for his actions, she managed to keep him from prison and continued using him towards her goals.
