2024 marks the twilight of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, and I, as a movie enthusiast, can’t help but look forward to what Taylor Sheridan has in store next. We’ve already seen two spin-offs unfold, 1883 and 1923, with The Madison and 6666 also brewing in the pipeline. Each of these series delves into the rich tapestry of the Dutton family, their history, traditions, and impact on shaping the American frontier, regardless of the time period they’re set in.
In 1944, with clear World War II connections and the aftermath that follows, the series will follow the journey of evolution for the Dutton family in Montana. As of now, Paramount+ has not disclosed an official release date or summary; however, fans have gathered some subtle hints and suggestions about what to anticipate when Sheridan’s new Yellowstone spin-off premieres on their platform. Here are the details known so far regarding the 1944 series.

‘Yellowstone’s Spin-off Legacy
1944’s plot can be inferred by drawing parallels with shows like Yellowstone and its spin-offs, as both share a similar structure where the narrative is set against a specific location and explores the intertwined personal and professional lives of prominent families. In the case of 1944, it seems to be a prequel or an early setting of Yellowstone’s world, possibly focusing on events in Montana during 1944, with potential conflicts arising between the Duttons and indigenous communities similar to those depicted in Yellowstone.
1883 takes place during its titled timeframe, just like 1923 does. The storyline of the former unfolds as the Dutton family embarks on their westward migration from Texas to Oregon, with a brief halt in Montana to establish and develop the Dutton Family Ranch. This series was initially presented as a 10-episode miniseries between the years 2021 and 2022.
1923, initially aired in 2022, follows the Dutton family’s journey as they navigate the shifting tides of industrialization, an ever-changing economic environment, bootlegging, prohibition, stock market crashes, and the Great Depression. Each generation faces their unique struggles of the time, providing a vivid portrait of determination and fortitude. The series has been renewed for a second season, set to premiere on Paramount+ on February 23, 2025.

So, What Is ‘1944’ About?
In 1944, I’m eagerly anticipating the Yellowstone spin-off that promises to delve into the subsequent Dutton family lineage post World War II. Although it remains uncertain if Alexandra and Spencer Dutton will grace our screens in their later years after their stories unfold in ‘1923’, there’s no doubt that fresh faces will take center stage, guiding the Duttons through the next wave of mid-century challenges. As of now, casting details for this exciting new chapter are yet to be disclosed.
Delving into the past, I found that the cinematography for the 1923 film was magnificently captured in Butte, Montana. However, fresh revelations about the location where the 1944 movie was shot have surfaced. As shared by Tom Prince through Ravalli Republic and being the EVP of 101 Studios (responsible for producing the hit series Yellowstone alongside Paramount), here’s the intriguing scoop:
It appears that the sequel to the movie set in 1923 will be titled “1944.” I suspect that since the story takes place at Chief Joseph Ranch, it may primarily film in the Bitterroot Valley as this location aligns with the setting.
The Chief Joseph Ranch lies within Darby, a town nestled in Southwestern Montana. This region, known as the Bitterroot Valley, is embraced by the Bitterroot River, the Bitterroot Range, and the Sapphire Mountains. Its expanse stretches from Missoula to the Lost Trail Pass, venturing into Idaho’s territories.
Prince continued, stating:
Last year, approximately $75 million was allocated within the Bitterroot Valley for housing, hotels, salaries, and bars. Furthermore, we produced a television series titled ‘1923’, which was filmed in Butte. We anticipate spending similar funds in that region as well.
Prince insists the Montana setting has paid viewership dividends, adding:
This marks our third year that we have been traveling to Montana. We initially arrived here two years ago following our relocation from Utah. Previously, we were consistently achieving 75-80% success rates in hunting during our first three seasons in Utah. However, we would venture up to Montana specifically for the Chief Joseph Ranch hunts. When COVID-19 emerged, Utah withdrew their rebates and Taylor Sheridan suggested moving the entire operation to Montana instead. It’s hardly shocking that the viewership numbers have surged following this move.
It remains uncertain if the viewership for 1944 will increase significantly until Paramount+ reveals the upcoming Yellowstone spin-off.

When Will ‘1944’ Be Released?
As of 1944’s ongoing development, Paramount has not announced an official release date yet. Before deciding on when to launch it, both Paramount and 101 Studios are contemplating where to position 6666 and The Madison, given that the anticipated Matthew McConaughey spin-off, 2024, failed to materialize as expected. With no cast, storyline, or release information available, it appears that we might have to wait a while before 1944 reaches audiences.
Ultimately, it’s Chris McCarthy, CEO of MTV Entertainment Studios (one of the Yellowstone production companies), who had the final say on this issue back in 2023.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a remarkable journey. Over the course of half a decade, what began as a popular U.S. cable series, Yellowstone, captivating five million viewers, transformed into a globally acclaimed franchise with over 100 million enthusiasts worldwide. With numerous expansions under our belt, we’re merely scratching the surface of this incredible storytelling journey. The best is yet to come!
Stepping up from the acclaimed series 1883 and 1923, we’re excited to announce our upcoming spinoffs, 1944 and 2024. These new installments will whisk audiences away on an exhilarating, unforeseen adventure, continuing the intricate, captivating narrative style that has defined this franchise and catapulted it into a globally recognized cultural sensation – all thanks to the genius of Taylor Sheridan, our creative visionary.
Stay tuned for more 1944 details as they come in.
