‘The Night Agent Season 2’s Bigger Twist

Warning: Spoilers for The Night Agent.

With great excitement among fans, “The Night Agent” made its comeback for season 2 following a two-year break. The new season starts with protagonist Peter (Gabriel Basso) being assigned to a Night Action mission in Thailand – his first since he saved President Travers (Kari Matchett) at the end of the previous season. However, when his secret identity is exposed, his partner, Alice (Brittany Snow), tragically loses her life. Uncertain about who’s reliable, Peter decides to operate independently and dig deeper into what truly transpired in Bangkok.

It’s not until Rose (Luciane Buchanan) gets a call from an unidentified man, who is later revealed as Jacob Monroe, an intelligence broker, inquiring about Peter’s well-being, that the pieces of the puzzle start falling into place. Utilizing her technical prowess, Rose pinpoints Peter’s location and they both embark on following up his trail. Moreover, she manages to persuade him to bring Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren) back into the mix. Initially hesitant, he complies, but with her presence, they gradually uncover a vast conspiracy that eventually points towards an ambition for control over the presidency and the White House.

The Chemical Attack Was a Means to an End

Jacob Had His Own Agenda the Entire Time

Despite the intricate and seemingly confusing sequence of events in season two, by its conclusion, the main narrative can be boiled down to a straightforward point. Noor Taheri (Arienne Mandi), an employee at the Iranian Mission, plays a pivotal role in bringing Peter and Rose to Solomon Vega (Berto Colon) and his superior, Jacob. This encounter is instrumental in helping them unravel the mystery. To clarify, Jacob, operating as an undercover intelligence trader, sold classified French information to Iran, with Noor monitoring Solomon’s involvement throughout the process.

In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, that sale was just a single deal for Jacob, who trades classified secrets from diverse nations to whoever seems interested in buying such confidential data. Peter catches a whiff of his trail when Solomon assassinates Alice in Bangkok, an incident witnessed by both Peter and Alice during one of Solomon’s transactions. Unfortunately, Peter’s investigation hits a dead end. However, it is only after Noor steps in that we manage to trace Solomon back to Jacob. Shockingly, we discover that Jacob had been peddling information about a top-secret biological weapons program called Foxglove. This revelation sets off an urgent race against time, as we now know that a chemical attack is imminent and our priority is to prevent it.

Following the acquisition of documents revealing details about Foxglove, Viktor Bala (previously a dictator ousted and imprisoned at The Hague), mobilizes his son Tomás (Rob Heaps) and nephew Markus (Michael Malarkey) to retaliate against his detainment. By secretly deploying KX, one of the Foxglove weapons, during the General Assembly at the UN, they aim to punish those responsible for his imprisonment. However, it was previously revealed that the U.S. had sold these weapons to Viktor, a claim he has long asserted but the U.S. vehemently denied. The U.N. eventually cleared the U.S., leaving only Viktor behind bars. Now, seeking justice for what he perceives as lies, Viktor sets in motion a plan that involves buying information about Foxglove and initiating KX’s production. Fortunately, Peter and Rose manage to seize the chemical weapon just in time, averting the impending attack.

As it transpires, the KX attack was actually a complex strategy designed for a specific outcome. Winning control of the White House was the ultimate objective. Over the course of eight years, Jacob secretly provides information to presidential candidate Governor Richard Hagan (Ward Horton), who later leaks a recording implicating his opponent, former CIA Director Patrick Knox (Geoffrey Owens), in an unsavory deal with Foxglove and its sale to Viktor. The revelation forces Knox out of the presidential race, effectively giving the election to Hagan. While Jacob may seem like just a middleman for intelligence, he was orchestrating things behind the scenes all along.

Does Peter Betray His Country Just Like His Father?

What Does That Mean for His Future With Night Action?

As a film enthusiast, I found myself in a predicament when I agreed to pilfer a crucial file from the UN building for Jacob. This act, though treasonous to my nation, seemed insignificant compared to the mission at hand – locating Tomás and Markus’ stolen chemical lab, used to manufacture Foxglove weapons. Little did I know that the file I had swapped for this information was the same one Hagan had used against Knox during the election. Unbeknownst to me, I had inadvertently aided and abetted in the manipulation of the presidential election, an act that could potentially cause even greater harm to our country.

In light of Hagan’s isolationist policy, there will likely be an increase in requests for Jacob’s expertise. With his newfound power within the White House, it seems that sensitive information passing through the president’s hands could potentially end up being sold to the highest bidder. Peter has been assigned the task of uncovering the true dynamics between Hagan and Jacob, as Jacob feels he now controls a Night Agent. Given this unique situation, only Peter can carry out such a mission. This new assignment sets the stage for Season 3 of The Night Agent series, currently streaming on Netflix. The Night Agent Season 2 is now available to watch on Netflix.
