It appears that “Star Trek: Section 31” can be streamed exclusively on Paramount+, making it the sole destination for fans eager to catch up with the latest film in the franchise after a nearly nine-year gap. Given its release circumstances and Michelle Yeoh’s prestigious background, I found myself questioning why it didn’t hit the big screen. TopMob reached out to Alex Kurtzman, head of the franchise, for an explanation, and learned some intriguing insights about the future direction of the movies.
Before the debut of Star Trek: Section 31, I had the pleasure of speaking with executive producer Alex Kurtzman and director Olutande Osunsanmi. In our conversation, I inquired as to why we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the action-packed series in movie theaters. Contrary to my expectations, it turns out that Kurtzman, who is instrumental in upcoming Trek productions, was not responsible for this decision; instead, he shared that it wasn’t under his control.
In essence, I don’t play a role in those matters; they are handled by higher-ups. My main concern has been with the television series, and due to various factors such as COVID, Michelle’s Oscar win, and changes in her schedule, it became more suitable to create Section 31 as a film rather than continuing it as a TV show. This decision was made to optimally tell the story and accommodate Michelle. Therefore, it seemed logical to release it as a Paramount+ film because it already had ties with their family of productions. However, for a broader perspective on Star Trek beyond the television shows, you would need to consult Paramount.
Back in the day, Alex Kurtzman played a significant role in bringing Star Trek back to the big screen, as he co-wrote the scripts for both the 2009 Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Moreover, he’s been instrumental in creating every live-action series in the franchise during the streaming era. Thus, learning that he won’t be part of the vision for the film side, including the upcoming origins movie, came as a surprise to me, a dedicated fan.
As a devoted Star Trek fan, I can’t help but ponder the unusual move behind the upcoming film, given that it appears to overlook one of the key creators who has led the franchise’s resurgence over the past decade and a half. It seems that Paramount might be keen on keeping Alex Kurtzman busy with the television side of things, while potentially introducing fresh ideas for the big screen.
In a captivating conversation, Michelle Yeoh shared an engaging tale that underscores her dedication to portraying Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Section 31 for an extended period.
It’s important to point out that this quote was shared prior to the widespread online criticism of “Star Trek: Section 31.” At present, the film has garnered only 23% approval from critics and 18% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. As Alex Kurtzman noted, the movie initially planned as a series, was instead transformed into a film to align with Yeoh’s demanding schedule.
It remains unclear if the action film will attract a large audience or not, and whether this departure from conventional Star Trek storytelling might prompt Paramount to approve more sequels featuring Michelle Yeoh as the lead character. Furthermore, we are still largely in the dark about what the upcoming Trek movie on the big screen will entail, though we know it is directed by Toby Haynes (of Andor) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith. I can only hope that it draws upon some of the franchise’s recent successes on television, but for now, we’ll simply have to wait and find out.
Tune into “Star Trek: Section 31” on Paramount+, and don’t forget to explore the vast selection of content available there. We anticipate that “Strange New Worlds” will make a comeback by year-end, and we hope for updates on that upcoming film too.
