FF7 Rebirth Director U-Turns on Mod Stance

After a long wait, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has arrived on PC, and it’s sure to spark a wave of creative modifications from the community. Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi previously raised concerns about mods for this JRPG, advising against creating anything inappropriate or explicit. However, now that the game is available on PC, Hamaguchi seems more open to exploring what these modifications might bring to the table.

In conversation with an Automaton, Hamaguchi clarified his thoughts on mods within Rebirth. He explained that mods have the potential to greatly improve games, although he emphasizes that they should not be misused, particularly with characters such as Tifa and Aerith. However, Hamaguchi believes that mods can be beneficial tools, which may be why his stance has evolved. It’s likely that he uses them in some PC games.

In regards to my PC gaming, I occasionally employ mods in my playtime. I understand that these modifications have become widely accepted within the community and provide enjoyment for numerous players – a sentiment I share myself. However, it’s important to note that I wasn’t advocating against the use of mods; rather, I was emphasizing the importance of considering their impact on the original gaming experience, as both creators and players should strive to ensure they don’t diminish it.

Given the fervor among Final Fantasy VII Rebirth enthusiasts upon spotting Tifa in a swimsuit, it’s intriguing to speculate about what modders might concoct once they get their hands on her. While some fans perceive Hamaguchi’s stance as somewhat traditional, incorporating modifications that enrich the game would be beneficial. Introducing additional outfits for characters and creative additions like new creatures and pop culture allusions would certainly be appealing.

Modifications to personal computers (PCs) significantly improve games by offering features unavailable on consoles. For instance, Persona 3 Reload incorporated a female protagonist from Portable, an addition that Atlus declined to make, albeit temporarily.
