Rumor: Avengers Game in the Works Set Outside the Failed Square Enix Game

Despite currently thriving, Marvel Rivals, it’s worth noting that many devoted fans still recall the hardships experienced by Marvel during periods when they struggled to leave an impact on the gaming scene.

The epic failure of the IP (Intellectual Property) was Square Enix’s “Marvel’s Avengers”. Although this game may have served as a cautionary tale for the industry regarding the adaptation of Marvel IP, it seems another developer is ready to give it a go with a game featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Avengers Game Incoming?

A trustworthy source, Daniel Richtman (via @cosmic_marvel), has hinted that a fresh Avengers video game might be under development. Notably, this new project isn’t linked to the Avengers game created by Crystal Dynamics, which was released in 2020 but had to be discontinued by 2023.

The developers haven’t disclosed any specifics regarding the next game yet, but they might have identified issues with the initial Avengers game and could be leveraging the triumph of Marvel Rivals as a guide for improvements.

Should the development of this game be ongoing, Marvel enthusiasts can anticipate exciting times ahead for several years. Furthermore, there’s an upcoming Wolverine game being developed by Insomniac Games, who are renowned for their work on Spider-Man.

Not That Bad

As a devoted fan, despite Marvel’s Avengers not quite hitting the mark for Square Enix in terms of commercial success, I still found plenty to appreciate about this AAA title. The graphical prowess was undoubtedly top-notch, but what truly captured my attention were the engaging gameplay mechanics for each hero and the immersive single-player campaign.

The game, in turn, unveiled the character of Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan to a broader public earlier than Disney+ did. Although Iman Vellani delivers an excellent portrayal of Kamala, the character in this game more closely resembled the comic book version of Ms. Marvel, with her quirky humor and ‘Embiggen’ stretchy abilities.

The game experienced significant issues in its overall design, particularly the repetitiveness of its missions. This was a sign of things to come, marking the beginning of a downward trend for large live-service games – a trend that culminated in the demise of titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which ended spectacularly a few years down the line.

What would be a Successful Avengers Game?

In simpler terms, since Marvel Rivals offers multiple playable heroes, it’s possible that the game titled Avengers might place more emphasis on a well-structured, narrative-driven, solo gaming experience.

The game titled Crystal Dynamics’ Guardians of the Galaxy received only positive feedback, but unfortunately, the rocky debut of Avengers led to less-than-expected performance for GOTG. However, on a positive note, the game has been gaining traction since its release and is widely regarded as one of the finest Marvel games from a studio.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that some folks believe the captivating success of Marvel Rivals could be due to its distinctive, stylized visuals. Reflecting on it now, perhaps the Avengers game aimed too high for realism, which might have given it an uninteresting feel.

The humorous tone of the competition added vibrancy to the game, potentially facilitating the process for developers to create character-based cosmetics – akin to the streamlined aesthetic in Overwatch.
