The action-packed sequel “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., is coming to digital stores ahead of its theatrical release, which is just a month away. Earlier this year, it made waves at the box office as an unexpected hit. However, with “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Companion,” among other highly-anticipated titles set to hit theaters next month, the studio appears to be moving up its release date to minimize competition.
In an unexpected revelation, the makers of Den of Thieves 2: Panthera shared on social media that the movie can be bought or rented digitally from Jan. 28 onwards. The follow-up, boasting a commendable 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has won praise from both critics and viewers, often being preferred over the initial 2018 film. At this moment, details regarding when or where Panthera will be accessible on a streaming service are not available. Interestingly, the original Den of Thieves is currently streamable on Max, and predictably, it has been quite popular there. It’s anticipated that Panthera might also find its way to Max later in 2023.
In the cinema earnings, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” has successfully fled with a substantial sum in its nondescript travel bag, continuing to play in movie theaters worldwide. To date, this film has earned $40 million globally, an amount equivalent to the sequel’s production cost. While these figures might seem small compared to other high-budget action films, they indicate that “Pantera” is on track to make approximately $80 million in total earnings, similar to its initial release. However, early digital releases may influence the final tally, potentially leaving “Pantera” slightly behind its predecessor. Despite this, recent developments suggest a strong possibility for “Den of Thieves 3.” The prospect of a third installment could generate some surprise regarding the potential of “Pantera” to launch a series.
Is ‘Den of Thieves 3’ in the Works?
In the thrilling world of action movies, I’m excited to share that I had a hand in bringing Den of Thieves 2: Pantera to life, with the aim of launching an exhilarating new franchise starring Gerard Butler. This time around, my character Big Nick finds himself in uncharted territory as he switches allegiances and teams up with Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), a criminal mastermind orchestrating daring high-stakes heists. The unexpected turn of events promises to breathe fresh life into the Den of Thieves universe.
Producer Tucker Cooley, in an interview with MovieWeb, hinted that Pantera was not just a standalone film but a stepping stone for future installments. In fact, they’ve been brainstorming ideas for Den of Thieves 3 and potentially more sequels beyond that.
We’ve got a solid plan for what comes next in our series. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but the evolution from the initial film to this one, and onwards, has been part of a larger scheme – creating a franchise. This franchise is all about intricate and intellectually stimulating heists, brought to life by talented actors who feel relatable. There are subtle layers in their performances that add depth to the story. So, it’s no accident, and if this one performs well, you can bet we’ll be making more!
Currently, there’s no official word on a third Den of Thieves movie. However, given the time it took for Pantera to be made after its initial announcement, a follow-up could potentially move faster if given the go-ahead. Butler, who filmed most of Pantera with a torn ACL (an essential knee ligament), has hinted that a new project won’t take too long. As long as viewers are eager for more sequels, it appears the Den of Thieves series is set to continue and is ready to plan another heist.
