For many years, viewers of “19 Kids and Counting” followed the growth of the Duggar girls. Throughout this period, it was evident that they preferred a modest style, often choosing long skirts as part of their wardrobe. Interestingly, due to growing up under the stringent guidelines of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), daughters like Jinger Vuolo (formerly Duggar) were specifically instructed to avoid wearing pants.
Years later, it turned out to be a subject of discussion, but during the filming of “19 Kids and Counting” on TLC (which was eventually canceled in 2015), not everyone had received the same information at that time. In fact, Jinger Duggar recently shared her experiences, stating that photoshoots for the series were often difficult, as even some of those connected to the show weren’t entirely sure about what the girls could or couldn’t wear.
They often placed your photograph near the wardrobe for easy identification. They had notes about your size, preferred style, and general aesthetic to maintain order. Occasionally, they’d select items for you, though a few seemed unaware that you didn’t wear trousers. As a result, they’d attempt to dress you in jeans with longer shirts.
In their January 22 podcast episode, Jeremy and Jinger Vuolo shared their unique experience with being part of a reality show, finding the photoshoots enjoyable yet hectic. Occasionally, there would be an unexpected delight as Jinger could keep an outfit; on one occasion, even Jeremy got a fantastic pair of Cole Haan boots. However, more often than not, the clothes were too large and had to be adjusted with pins.
The whole thing sounds like it was a big challenge.
It was somewhat tricky to ensure everyone wore outfits they preferred, as I wasn’t always certain about their style preferences. This uncertainty made me a bit apprehensive. To be clear, I didn’t want it to seem like we were imposing our choices on them, even though that’s essentially what happened.
Among all the distinctive traits of the Duggars that have garnered attention, the “pants issue” has been particularly intriguing to the public. However, it was Jinger Duggar who shared that she had informed her parents of her decision to wear pants more often, primarily due to a concern that a “photographer might capture an image” of her while out and about.
During a different conversation, Jinger shared insights into the shift in her clothing views. She mentioned that she needed to reread the Bible to understand that certain aspects can be open to interpretation.
It’s not necessary to wear skirts to be acceptable to God; the statement ‘don’t wear that which is associated with a man’ doesn’t mean you should never wear pants. This verse was often interpreted to imply that only skirts are allowed, but upon further investigation, it appears that the matter isn’t as straightforward as it seems.
In the same YouTube video, Jeremy, her spouse, shared his thoughts on additional IBLP principles he hadn’t known about before starting their courtship with Jinger. For instance, he was unaware that social activities like going to the gym were restricted. It was quite an awakening for him to learn that many individuals who had a similar upbringing as Jinger needed to redefine themselves once they left the church’s organizational framework.
Which leads us to the Duggars relaxing some of the rules.
Jinger Isn’t The Only Duggar To Relax The Pants Rules
For quite some time now, many of the Duggar daughters have been seen in public wearing casual attire such as sweatpants, jeans, or occasionally shorts. Jessa Duggar was one of the first to embrace this style, while Jinger Duggar was the pioneer by posting a picture of herself wearing shorts on Instagram. As they establish their own families and step away from the world of reality TV, it appears that these women are discovering their unique fashion dos and don’ts.
Recently, we’ve come across a picture showing matriarch Michelle wearing trousers. It seems clear to me that the strict “no pants” rule may have been loosened now.
Over the past few years, Jinger has been candid about her childhood experiences. While she acknowledges that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar provided a generally content upbringing, she expressed that the restrictive rules and high expectations of her environment felt like her life path had already been predetermined. However, things changed when she met her husband, Jeremy Vuolo. They decided to move their lives to the Los Angeles area, and Jinger later wrote two books: “Growing Up Duggar” and “People Pleaser”. She described writing these books as challenging and intimidating because she was exposing herself publicly.
