Today, Justin Lin’s new movie, “Last Days,” is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Interestingly, if it weren’t for Keanu Reeves, the director of “Fast & Furious” might not have had a film to screen at all. Lin directs a biographical drama centered around John Allen Chau, detailing the series of events that culminated in a young missionary attempting to connect with a secluded tribe on an island in the Indian Ocean.
While conversing with The Wrap at Sundance, Lin revealed to the publication that there was a point in time when he doubted if Last Days would ever be produced due to financial issues with the project. Such uncertainties are common among independent productions. However, in this instance, it was Keanu Reeves who stepped in to save the day, not for any personal accolades or producing credits, but solely because he wished to lend a hand.
At a crucial instant, everything disintegrated. You can’t predict the outcome of every experience; life is unpredictable, like a rollercoaster ride. In that moment, I feared it was all over. However, there are guiding forces who assist us in our time of need. Incidentally, I received a call from Keanu Reeves, learning about our troubles, and he offered his help, which was truly motivating.
In his continued statement, Lin acknowledged that due to Reeves’ assistance, he encountered “the finest aspects of human kindness,” as everyone rallied to support the production of “Last Days.” Notably, this project represents Lin’s reentry into independent filmmaking after an absence of 18 years, during which period he directed several high-profile blockbusters such as four Fast & Furious films and the 2016 release “Star Trek Beyond.
In an advantageous circumstance, I found myself with the ability and means to simply declare, “Let’s do it! Let’s establish a departure date.” To be entirely honest, I can’t quite explain the mechanism behind this decision; it was more of an inner impulse that stirred within me. The thought that resonated, “We’ll make this happen, no matter what,” had an immediate transformative effect on our situation. In that instant, everything shifted, and we found ourselves preparing for a journey that would ultimately set us up for success. I encountered the very best humanity has to offer, with individuals from all corners of the globe joining our cause. This is how our film project came to life.
John Allen Chau’s Story Had a Tragic Ending
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’ve always been drawn to untold stories, especially those that resonate with courage and determination. At only 26, John Allen Chau dared to bridge the gap between our world and the enigmatic Sentinelese tribe residing on North Sentinel Island in the heart of the Indian Ocean. His mission was to share the message of God, a journey that unfortunately ended tragically when he was met with fatal consequences after making contact. This captivating tale made waves globally in 2018, sparking intense debate and scrutiny within the Christian missionary community. The story has since been beautifully documented by National Geographic, a film I had the privilege of watching in 2023. Now, this compelling narrative can be easily accessed on Disney+ for anyone eager to delve deeper into this remarkable tale.
Featuring Sky Yang, Naveen Andrews, and Radhika Apte, the movie titled “Last Days” aims to provide additional clarity about various aspects, including delving into Chau’s past when he was mentored by a religious group headquartered in Kansas City before his journey abroad. As of now, there is no information regarding its release in cinemas nationwide, but we’ll keep you updated on the project’s progress. Until then, don’t miss out on the newest addition to the Fast & Furious series, “Fast X“, currently available for streaming on Peacock.
