Jim Acosta Exits CNN: Is Time Slot Chaos to Blame for This Major Departure?

Over the years, CNN has undergone significant transformations along with the evolving media landscape. Notably, the network has seen key personnel changes, including a change in CEO, and now it appears another prominent figure, Jim Acosta, is leaving after expressing his intent to step down. As of now, no official reason for Acosta’s departure from the corporation has been disclosed; however, it seems that adjustments in programming schedules (possibly due to fluctuating ratings) might have played a role in this decision.

In simpler terms, during the Tuesday edition of CNN Newsroom, Jim Acosta acknowledged his departure from the company owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. During his speech, he looked back on the work he accomplished there. He particularly mentioned the trip he took to Cuba with former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2016 as a memorable experience. Lastly, he expressed gratitude to viewers for their support throughout his tenure.

At the close of today’s broadcast, I’d like to express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who works tirelessly behind the scenes at our network. Although you may have heard rumors about me and the show, after much thought and evaluating an alternative time slot CNN proposed for me, I’ve chosen to embark on a new journey. I am deeply thankful for almost two decades of news coverage with CNN.

The former CBS News reporter who currently hosts the 10 a.m. segment of Newsroom on weekdays is being replaced by Wolf Blitzer’s show, The Situation Room. Previously occupying a 6 p.m. ET timeslot, Blitzer’s program will be moving to the vacated slot. CBS has been in talks to find a new time for Jim Acosta as they adjust their programming. Following his departure, CNN issued a statement about the change.

Throughout his career at the news network, Jim Acosta occupied various roles, including national political correspondent, chief domestic correspondent on weekends, and anchor. In 2018, he was promoted to White House Correspondent, but this came with controversy as his White House access was temporarily revoked following a heated exchange with President Donald Trump. CNN took legal action over the incident, alleging that a video shared by the White House was manipulated. The lawsuit was withdrawn once Acosta’s access was reinstated.

A couple of other prominent commentators have departed from the network under circumstances distinctly different than the previous host of American Morning. In 2021, Chris Cuomo was dismissed following claims that he assisted his brother, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, in responding to sexual misconduct allegations. Subsequently, Chris filed a lawsuit against his ex-employers, claiming wrongful termination and seeking millions. Similarly, Don Lemon was let go from CNN after being accused of misconduct; however, he believes the decision was made for corporate reasons rather than personal misdeeds.

It’s unclear what lies ahead for Jim Acosta following his departure from CNN, but he’s suggested that he’ll soon disclose his future plans within the coming days. For now, however, he needs to deliver his final broadcast, and the date for this farewell show has not been announced yet.
