2025 promises a lineup of much-anticipated returning series such as “The White Lotus”, “Andor”, “The Last of Us” and “Stranger Things”. Additionally, “The Night Agent” Season 2, premiering on Netflix in 2025, has already made waves. The drama show quickly climbed to the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 trending list after its January 23 debut, a move I expected given its popularity. However, what leaves me curious is that it was swiftly displaced by another show.
To begin with, I’d like to clarify that Shawn Ryan’s espionage series isn’t the worst out there. In fact, as we speak, it holds the second position. The question might arise about what took its place at the top. The answer is WWE Monday Night Raw, which has climbed to the number one spot on the streaming service. This shift happened because of a deal between the streaming service and the wrestling organization that made Monday Night Raw available for live streaming earlier this month. It’s impressive that Raw holds the top position, but it had an edge due to its early availability on the platform.
The term “Raw” is part of a larger strategy by the mentioned streamer to delve into live sports broadcasts, and these shows are experiencing substantial viewership on the same day. Furthermore, such programs, including last year’s NFL game on Christmas Day and the problem-ridden fight between Paul and Tyson, have made it onto trending lists. However, not everyone is pleased with the Top 10 change. A possible solution to alleviate this could be to establish a separate list for sports content. For now, all types of content will continue to coexist in the same location without categorization.
If you’re feeling disappointed because Night Agent isn’t currently No. 1, don’t worry! It might regain its position at the top soon, possibly within a day or two. This is likely because more people will discover it as time passes, while an event that was livestreamed earlier won’t attract as much fresh interest. Additionally, given its high-quality status among Netflix series, it has a history of generating excitement and buzz.
In March 2023, Shawn Ryan’s series, “The Night Agent,” made a splash. Just three weeks after its premiere, it broke through as Netflix’s ninth most-watched series ever, thanks to its subscribers. Around the same period, it was announced that the show would return for Season 2. Given this success, it came as no shock to me that the new season soon outpaced its competitors in popularity rankings.
In the second installment, viewers find themselves drawn into another exhilarating escapade starring FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). Unlike previous seasons, this time the main events unfold in New York instead of Washington D.C. The series’ popularity has been soaring, prompting the streaming service to greenlight a third season even before its premiere. In an exclusive interview with TopMob, Basso hinted at potential locations for Season 3, suggesting Nepal as an intriguing possibility.
Despite being knocked down, Peter Sutherland (or The Night Agent on Netflix Top 10 list) bounces back. However, there’s debate about how live programming affects rankings. I can’t help but wonder if adjustments will be made to prevent live sports programs like Raw from jumping ahead in the standings as they did here.
