Sony Shakeup: Hiroki Totoki Named CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida to Remain as Chairman

On Wednesday, Sony Group announced that Hiroki Totoki, their current president, will take on the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) starting April 1st. This marks a significant change in leadership for the Japanese tech and entertainment conglomerate, which has been seven years since any such transition occurred. Kenichiro Yoshida, who currently holds both CEO and Chairman positions, will continue as Chairman only.

Sony proposed a plan to further boost the marketing efforts of Totoki, aligning with their current approach emphasizing entertainment and utilizing intellectual property as a means to stimulate growth.

In a recent statement, the current CEO, Totoki, expressed his intent to build upon the accomplishments of his predecessors Kazuo Hirai and Kenichiro Yoshida, who significantly increased Sony’s worth. His goal is to add even more success to this legacy and pass on an even stronger Sony to future leaders. During a strategic meeting last May, we unveiled our ‘Creative Entertainment Vision,’ which lays out our aspirations for where Sony should be in the next decade, with our core purpose serving as our compass. The key to realizing this vision is the variety of our businesses and people, an integral part of Sony’s identity, combined with our boundary-crossing employees who link these diverse elements organically to create new value.

In April 2023, Totoki assumed the role of president at Sony, a position he held alongside his roles as the company’s COO and CFO for its electronic and entertainment operations.

New developments announced by Sony involve Hideaki Nishino taking over as the sole CEO for Sony Interactive Entertainment, the division responsible for PlayStation production. This role also includes Lin Tao, who has become the first female CFO in Sony’s over-80 year history. With 20 years of experience at Sony, Tao was previously the senior VP of finance, corporate strategy and development for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Nishino will now serve as CEO for both the Platform Business Group and Studio Business Group. Simultaneously, Shinji Sashida has been appointed to lead the Imaging and Sensing Solutions division, a key focus area for Sony’s hardware sector.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, it seems Totoki demonstrated a glimpse of his future leadership role when he spearheaded Sony’s high-profile event. During this trade show, Sony announced that investing in Japanese anime would be a key part of their growth strategy moving forward. They aim to utilize their intellectual properties and production abilities across entertainment, music, and gaming industries.

In a previous conversation with THR, Totoki expressed that Anime has become a worldwide sensation with an enthusiastic following. He emphasized Sony’s dedication to enhancing the fan experience by converting beloved tales into anime productions and making them accessible to viewers across the globe.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Sony announced that its anime divisions Crunchyroll and Aniplex are joining forces to create an animated series based on the popular PlayStation samurai game, “Ghost of Tsushima”. Additionally, Sony Pictures is developing a movie adaptation of this property. The adaptations mirror successful cross-platform projects like the HBO show “The Last of Us”, which was inspired by the hit PlayStation games.

Enhancing its control over this intellectual property, Sony invested $320 million to boost its share to 10% in Kadokawa Corporation, a prominent Japanese creator of manga, anime, and video games like the popular “Elden Ring” series.

Ever since I took over as president and CEO in April 2018, Totoki has been an integral part of our leadership team. He drove growth initiatives for the Sony Group, including our ventures into content intellectual property and semiconductors, and is a visionary who can mold our future plans for expansion,” said departing Sony CEO Yoshida on Wednesday. “From now on, I will assist Totoki as he steers his fresh management team.
