Indigenous Cinema Celebrates 10 Years at Berlinale and European Film Market

For the tenth anniversary, the Indigenous Cinema Alliance (ICA) once again graces the Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market (EFM). This occasion highlights indigenous and Native American filmmakers from around the globe.

Founded in 2015 as the NATIVe Indigenous Cinema Stand, the ICA functions as a stage for Indigenous filmmakers to present their commercially viable works to the global film industry. Since its beginning, the ICA has been an official partner with the EFM, and it is run by imagineNATIVE. This organization forms part of a worldwide network of indigenous film institutions, including the International Sami Film Institute (ISFI), 4th World Media Lab, Film Greenland (Film.GL), Pacific Islanders in Communications, If Not Us Then Who?, MULLU, PISA, and the Winda Film Festival.

Beyond showcasing projects, the International Conference on Indigenous Cinema (ICA) also facilitates discussions in panel settings and networking opportunities to connect Indigenous artists internationally, as well as assessing the global standing of Indigenous filmmaking.

Screenings of new projects at EFM encompass a diverse range, such as Mike Jonathan’s Maori-era action film titled “Ka Whawhai Tonu / Struggle Without End“, Darcy Waite’s Manitoba-located bowling comedy called “Lucky Strikes“, the Norwegian series “Heajastallan – A Sámi Wedding“, and Lisa Jackson’s documentary “Wilfred Buck’s Star Stories“, which will be showcased in Berlin’s Forum Expanded selection.

Indigenous Co-Productions” pitch event will transpire, showcasing six collaborative projects in search of international partners.

You can check out the full schedule of events on the ICA’s website.
