In a thrilling turn of events, it’s been announced that the animated series “Creature Commandos” is coming back for another season! This time around, we’ll meet a brand-new gang of monster-esque villains. Interestingly, James Gunn, who developed the series and holds the position of co-CEO at DC Studios, has disclosed that the highly praised Season 1 almost featured an entirely different set of characters for our title team. For ardent fans of the original content, several names might ring a bell, while also hinting at potential new members joining the “Creature Commandos” in the future.
In a chat with a fan through Threads, Gunn disclosed that a few well-known villains from the DC universe, reminiscent of creature-type characters, were initially intended for Task Force M within Creature Commandos. Four distinct characters – Wolfpack, Man-Bat, Vincent Velcoro, and Solomon Grundy – were mentioned by Gunn. These characters bear similarities to members of the supervillain group. Initially, Wolfpack and Man-Bat were thought to replace Weasel on the team. According to Gunn’s revelations, the vampiric Vincent Velcoro was almost included but eventually became Dr. Phosphorous, while Solomon Grundy – the most well-known among them – was also considered before being replaced by Frankenstein.
In my planning process, both Wolfpack and Man-Bat were contenders, with Man-Bat being a particular favorite. However, the idea of incorporating too many wild and furry characters seemed excessive given my intention to focus on Weasel’s narrative. I pondered over Vincent Velcoro but desired a character less common, hailing from an unusual corner of DC Comics. In the end, I opted for Dr. Phosphorous. Solomon Grundy was another favorite I considered, but my decision was firm – I was committed to featuring Frankenstein’s monster.
Instead of introducing popular characters like Man-Bat and Solomon Grundy in Creature Commandos, Gunn opted to use less familiar villains from the DC universe. This decision proved beneficial for the debut project of the rebooted DCU, as it kickstarted the cinematic universe with fresh faces. Despite their initial consideration for the animated series, fans should not be surprised if some or all of these omitted characters eventually appear in other upcoming DCU projects.
Meet the New Team in ‘Creature Commandos’ Season 2
For Season 2 of “Creature Commandos”, we’ve got some exciting updates! A refreshed lineup of the supervillain team has been unveiled, featuring both new and familiar faces. Previous members of Task Force M making a comeback are The Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel, and G.I. Robot, who underwent a significant transformation in the season finale. Joining them in the upcoming season will be King Shark (previously seen in “The Suicide Squad”), Nosferata, and Khalis. During the season finale, viewers got their first glimpse of these new additions, with The Bride being announced as the official leader of this top-secret squad.
As a die-hard fan of the animated series, Creature Commandos, I can’t help but wonder when we’ll get our hands on Season 2. The early renewal during its debut on Max last year was a testament to the studio’s confidence in the show. With this positive sign, it seems likely that Season 2 could grace our screens before the year ends. However, until then, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for the official launch of the DC Universe on the big screen with this summer’s Superman, a movie that keeps making waves in the headlines.
