Herman Miller Has Reproduced Alexander Girard’s Famed Girard Flower Table

Alexander Girard played a significant role in Herman Miller’s past: he initiated and oversaw their textile division in 1952, working with the company for more than two decades. During his tenure, he designed numerous iconic items, including the lively Color Wheel Ottoman and the stimulating Environmental Enrichment Panels. For the first time, Herman Miller is making one of Girard’s designs widely available: the Girard Flower Table, an elegant brass piece boasting scalloped edges on its circular top and a repeating, petal-like pattern at its base. Originally showcased as part of the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana, a home designed by Girard in collaboration with the renowned architect Eero Saarinen, this table was centered within a vibrant sunken seating area.

In 2022, Girard Studio, a business established and managed by Girard’s children to promote and maintain his designs, collaborated with Vitra to reintroduce this table into the market. More recently, Herman Miller has assumed responsibility for its production and made it accessible in North America for the very first time.


Instead of being constructed from brass, it’s now composed of powder-coated steel, allowing it to be used indoors and outdoors. It comes in both anthracite and red color options, as well as small and large sizes. These sizes and colors were designed to blend harmoniously whether used individually or together.

According to Amy Auscherman, who is in charge of archives and brand heritage at MillerKnoll, Girard added a sense of warmth and humanity to contemporary design that was missing before. Unlike George Nelson and Herman Miller, he wasn’t shy about using textures and vibrant colors. This approach made modernism seem less harsh during the time it was perceived as such. As seen in the Miller House and other famous interiors designed by Girard, his work brought a touch of lightness to the otherwise cold perception of modernism.
