Last week’s news revealed that Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are set to return to their iconic roles from the beloved romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally…” for a new collaboration. Now, it has been disclosed what this project entails: they will be appearing together in a Super Bowl commercial alongside Sydney Sweeney.
In 1989, Ryan and Crystal acted alongside each other in a beloved Rob Reiner film titled “When Harry Met Sally.” Their characters, Harry Burns and Sally Albright, were lifelong friends who found themselves attracted to one another after years of reconnecting by chance. Throughout the movie, viewers witnessed several memorable moments, including a scene where Ryan’s character convincingly simulated an orgasm in a deli.
In this Super Bowl LIX commercial for Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, Crystal and Ryan recreated their iconic scene from a popular movie at New York’s Katz’s Delicatessen (as seen below). And let me tell you, it did not fall short of expectations! Upon re-entering the location, Crystal exclaims, “I can’t believe we’re back here,” while reminiscing with Ryan. However, Ryan found his sandwich less than appealing, so Crystal decided to enhance its taste with a generous squirt of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise. To demonstrate how much she enjoyed it, she let out sighs and moans of pleasure, even slapping the table in delight. “This one’s authentic,” Crystal confirms. As the 30-second ad draws to a close, Sydney Sweeney makes an entrance to utter the famous quote, “I’ll have what she’s having,” which was initially spoken by Reiner’s mother in the original film.
Over time, the scene featuring a fake orgasm has been humorously reenacted by numerous personalities including Drew Barrymore, Craig Ferguson, and The Muppets. In one instance, Crystal and Miss Piggy mimicked this act by pretending to sneeze, illustrating the skill women possess in faking a sneeze. This scene has gained such notoriety that Katz’s Delicatessen still displays a sign over the table where it was filmed, saying “Where Harry Met Sally… May You Have What She Had!
‘When Harry Met Sally…’ Remains An Endearing Classic
Few romantic comedies from the 1980s have continued to captivate audiences like When Harry Met Sally…. This classic film was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2022, and it continues to resonate with viewers due to its universal themes of love and friendship. As director Nora Ephron said, this is what makes the movie so endearing – “It becomes more significant as time passes because people continue to fall in love every day.
Day after day, individuals experience the ebb and flow of love. Every day, they connect with one another, only to drift apart at times. Yet, fresh generations continue to find themselves reflected in “When Harry Met Sally…” – a timeless classic that captures their experiences and keeps them eternally youthful within its narrative. We, too, embody these stories and resonate with their feelings.
Currently, you can’t stream “When Harry Met Sally…” anywhere, but you can rent or buy it through Video On Demand (VOD). In a special event during Super Bowl LIX on February 9, tune into FOX or stream it live for the first time ever on Tubi, to catch Crystal and Ryan’s reunion commercial.
