In a nutshell, if you combine actors from two well-known horror series legends and cast them in a single film, you end up with “Devoted“, a new horror production helmed by writer/director Richard J. Bosner. This movie features Lin Shaye, Skeet Ulrich, Mena Suvari, Elizabeth Marvel, Alicia Sanz and Nick Stahl. It’s no secret that Lin Shaye is renowned for her work in the hit Insidious franchise, while Skeet Ulrich gained fame in the ’90s for his role as Billy Loomis in the Scream series.
Through Variety, it’s noted that Bosner is launching his feature film career with “Devoted” and additionally serves as a producer alongside Robert Ogden Barnum, Eric Binns, and Carissa Knol. The movie features Suvari as a woman who assumes guardianship of her long-lost sister (Marvel), the sole survivor of a recent mass cult suicide. Initial joy over their reunion quickly turns to fear as her sister’s influence transforms her and her husband’s (Ulrich) life into a horrifying nightmare. In a statement, first-time director Bosner praised the talented cast while expressing his admiration for classic horror cinema.
My love for traditional horror and the supernatural is woven into this gripping tale that delves into fear and the extreme measures taken to safeguard cherished loved ones. An outstanding ensemble breathes life into this chilling narrative, their skill and commitment infusing a genuine terror.
The movie Devoted is inspired by Bosner’s short film titled Devotee, which first appeared at the 2024 Hollyshorts Film Festival and was also chosen for the 2024 Beyond Fest. In his review, Neil Baker from Cinerama described it as a heartfelt tribute to the horror genre’s knack for generating an instant, overwhelming feeling of fear right away, while still capturing the ambiance of classic 60s and 70s horror. The feature film adaptation is currently in post-production, with no official release date announced yet.
Lin Shaye Remains a Staple in the Horror Genre
Although Ulrich ventured into different genres post “Scream“, including a leading role on the popular CW show “Riverdale“, Shaye has consistently been associated with horror films. Fans fondly recall her as the teacher in Wes Craven’s 1984 hit “A Nightmare on Elm Street“, and cherish her roles in the “Critters” series, as well as movies like “2001 Maniacs“, and “Snoop Dogg’s Hood of Horror“.
Initially, Shaye showcased her comedic talents in films such as “There’s Something About Mary”, “Me, Myself & Irene”, and “National Lampoon’s Pledge This”. However, it was her character as psychic Elise Rainier in the 2010 horror film “Insidious” that resonated with fans who were accustomed to her work in this genre. Since then, she has continued to appear in the sequels of this franchise, and has been seen in several other horror productions, including “Oujia: Origin of Evil”, “Scared to Death”, and the 2020 remake of “The Grudge”.
If you’re excited to revisit the movies that made Shaye and Ulrich famous, you can stream “Insidious” on Hulu or Peacock right now. Also available is the 1996 classic “Scream,” which you can find streaming on Max.
