Cynthia Erivo and the Wicked team remain immersed in their triumphs set in the land of Oz, primarily due to the intense dedication shown by those involved in transforming the Broadway production into a film. Notably, Erivo played a significant role in shaping Elphaba’s character and appearance. A recent discovery has unveiled an Easter egg related to Elphaba, further validating Erivo’s worthy position among the potential 2025 Oscar nominees.
Wicked has continued to defy gravity at the box office and the press circuit. So, the film’s director, Jon M. Chu, and Cynthia Erivo sat down to talk about it with The Wrap, and while in conversation they opened up about the Elphaba detail. The In the Heights director shared that the Harriet star probed about the idea of Elphie’s eye color, seemingly pretty early on in production. He noted that he was unsure of the choice at the time, saying:
I recall receiving a text from you [Cynthia Erivo] regarding green eyes. My initial thought was, “Green eyes, is this a brilliant idea or a mistake?” I wasn’t sure how to react. I believe I responded with something like, “Let’s give it a go and experiment with some options.
As a film enthusiast, I wasn’t taken aback at all that the three-time Academy Award nominee immersed herself so deeply into her character. She’s consistently brought her A-game in every role, and the Wicked Witch of the West is no different. It’s probably one of many factors that made Chu and the production team decide to cast her; she never holds back.
Later on, Erivo explained her reason for messaging the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” regarding the emerald eye concept. She pointed out that she aimed to make Elphaba’s emotions and instances of isolation resonate deeply with the Witch’s essence. Furthermore, she disclosed that apart from the green eyes, other distinctive physical traits were also incorporated into the character’s appearance, as she detailed.
As a movie enthusiast, I yearned for her to stand out ever so slightly amidst the crowd in that setting. There was an unusual quality about her that didn’t quite align with everyone else. And as we delved into the concept of green, I pondered, how profoundly green is she? Is it merely her skin hue or does the verdant tint permeate her very essence? So, when her fingernails sprout, they sprout green. Her eyes mirror the emerald hue because it’s an integral aspect of who she is. It transcends mere pigmentation.
Wicked: For Good Is Coming This Year
Wicked: For Good’s release is slated for a November 21 release on the 2025 movie schedule.
As a film enthusiast, let me tell you, Cynthia Erivo is undeniably a remarkable and coveted talent. Her ability to embody both grand traits and subtle, seemingly insignificant physical aspects in her characters is nothing short of astounding. I’m glad the scriptwriters opted for the eye color change because her captivating green eyes truly elevated the role, adding that extra layer that the 38-year-old herself had envisioned. This performance even earned her an Academy Award nomination.
After being nominated, she openly expressed a sincere and emotional thought about the possibility of LGBTQ+ history at the Oscars. Win or lose, Erivo is looking forward to another character role with a magical theme. The upcoming awards ceremony promises intrigue; no matter the result, we know the talented singer-actress will give her best performance, and we eagerly anticipate her next move.
Without a doubt, Elphaba’s character evolution in the Ozian film is unique, and I, along with many others, admire Cynthia Erivo’s captivating portrayal of it.
