It’s revealed that Nico’s parents are powerful dark wizards, and surprisingly, Nico possesses magical abilities as well. Her unique weapon is The Staff of One, which was previously used by her mother. This staff is incredibly potent, even causing fear in the Dark Lord Dormmamu. However, the staff’s power comes at a price. Firstly, Nico must wound herself to activate it, reflecting how magic often involves sacrifice. Secondly, she can’t repeat the same spell, and attempting to do so may lead to mishaps or unforeseen consequences. Nico manifests the Staff of One by drawing it from her body.

Nico’s unique gothic style has set her apart, earning her a highly recognizable status within The Runaways. Over time, she rose to lead the team, an achievement that places her among the rare Japanese-American female superheroine leaders in Marvel comics. Furthermore, Nico is one of the prominent LGBTQ characters in the Marvel Universe, as she entered into a romantic relationship with her fellow team member, Karolina Dean. The show “Runaways” concluded on a suspenseful note, hinting at an evil Alex Wilder version threatening Nico’s life. However, the series also provided a glimmer of hope that this outcome might not materialize, as the group of six young superheroes were united and departing for breakfast, suggesting a content ending. This series, which has been somewhat overlooked in the Marvel universe, boasts impressive quality comparable to “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones,” making it worthy of equal recognition.

Is ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Nico the Same as ‘Runaways’

In the show “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” fans were thrilled to see Nico Minoru, as she marked the first time a character from the “Runaways” series, which is produced by Marvel Entertainment, appeared in a Marvel Studios production. This connection to the main MCU timeline was often unclear. While Grace Song voices Nico in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” and Lyrica Okano plays her in “Runaways,” having different voice actors doesn’t necessarily mean their characters share the same canonical links. Lyrica Okano reprised her role as Nico in the game “Marvel’s Midnight Suns.” However, this version of Nico had no continuity ties to the Marvel television series beyond being played by Lyrica Okano.

In the storyline of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” we find a version of Nico Minoru who differs from the one known in The Runaways. A significant shift has occurred, as Nico resides in New York City rather than Los Angeles – a departure from both the original comics and the Runaways TV series. The prequel comic for “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” released in December 2024, reveals that although Nico hails from Los Angeles, she moved to New York with her foster mother to study at Midtown High. The comic does not delve into the reasons behind Nico’s stay with a foster family or the fate of her parents, leaving room for speculation about whether this timeline deviates from the one in which Nico and her fellow Runaways uncovered their parents’ nefarious scheme in the Hulu series. If that storyline is considered canonical.

It’s uncertain if Nico Minoru in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is an adaptation from the “Runaways” series, as the show’s connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is not definitively established, and it’s not currently a major concern for Disney or Marvel since “The Runaways” isn’t streaming on Disney+. In theory, Nico could still fit into the “Runaways” narrative as an alternate version, considering that the “Runaways” series was set in the MCU’s Sacred Timeline in 2017, which is two years before this new timeline begins. This implies that Nico Minoru would have moved into a foster home before she and her fellow Runaways discovered their parents’ secret. So, Nico Minoru in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” can be seen as both an adaptation of the “Runaways” series and not an adaptation, depending on one’s perspective.

Nico Minoru’s Future in ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ and the MCU

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man, Nico Minoru is portrayed as Peter Parker’s closest friend. However, she remains unaware of his secret identity as Spider-Man. It would be interesting to see if her character discovers this secret, similar to how Ned Leeds did in the MCU. Given her comic book and on-screen characteristics, it’s possible that Nico may possess magical abilities and eventually become a superhero herself. This could potentially pave the way for other characters from the Runaways to make an appearance in Spider-Man’s world.

Including Nico Minoru in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” doesn’t automatically mean that the live-action version of the character from “Runaways” will reappear or that Disney+ will resurrect their series alongside “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, given that Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal are returning as Daredevil, Kingpin, and Punisher respectively, it at least hints that Nico and her fellow Runaways might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially if her character in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” gains popularity.

There are whispers that Disney+ is planning a Strange Academy series, where Wong will mentor a fresh group of magic users. It’s an opportune moment to consider including Nico in the cast, and Lyrica Okano could perfectly reprise her role given her previous work. Nico has already appeared in the Midnight Suns video game, suggesting potential for an MCU film. It’s likely that Nico, along with Blade, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, and Man-Thing, will be part of the ensemble.
