As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been following the exciting developments in the world of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production banner for more than two years now. Recently, they’ve decided to shake things up by revamping their executive team and bringing on a new member to strengthen their leadership in business affairs.
Previously, Andrew Gumpert, who served as the chief operating officer for Paramount Pictures, has been appointed to a new position within the company – President of Business Affairs & Strategy. This announcement was made on Wednesday. Additionally, Damon and Affleck have elevated Dillon West, who joined Artists Equity in November 2022 from RedBird Capital Partners, to the role of Chief Operating Officer.
The actions took place in alignment with the announcement that Michael Joe, the founding COO of Artists Equity, was transitioning from his role to an advisory position while continuing as a member of the company’s board of directors. Previously, Joe had been associated with Affleck and Damon’s venture following stints at STX Films and Universal Pictures.
Gumpert spent six years working at Paramount and Nickelodeon Studios, contributing to projects like Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible series, and the Transformers franchise. However, he left in 2023 as the studio was reorganizing its priorities before a sale. Previously, Gumpert had served as president of worldwide business affairs & operations at Sony Pictures for over a decade.
Artists Equity, known for backing successful projects such as Amazon MGM’s film Air ($90 million globally) and Cillian Murphy drama Small Things Like These ($10 million worldwide), is preparing for its next major release: Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2. This action-packed sequel will premiere at SXSW in March. Furthermore, the banner of Affleck and Damon also supported Jennifer Lopez’s film Kiss of the Spider Woman, which received generally positive reviews upon its debut at Sundance.
In the realm of streaming movies, Artists Equity has supported two upcoming productions: Doug Liman’s “The Instigators,” which is being produced by Apple Original Films, and William Goldenberg’s sports drama “Unstoppable” for Amazon’s Prime Video platform.
The banner (or studio) was initiated with an announced $100 million investment pledge from Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital Partners, a firm that has been involved in financing production vehicles for some time now. As suggested by its name, Artists Equity, the company was established with a promise to provide performance-linked compensation to actors and crew members, allowing them to share in the profits of a movie feature.
