Let me take you back to February 2024; remember that unofficial Willy Wonka-style event in Glasgow? It left Scottish kids bawling and the internet rolling with laughter. Well, horror enthusiasts have just experienced a similar rollercoaster with “Insidious: The Further You Fear”. This show was marketed as a bone-chilling, live immersive horror experience based on the Insidious movie series. Unfortunately, it’s been pulled after only a handful of performances.
The performance first appeared in Lafayette, Arkansas on January 18th, sparking discontent among viewers who felt misled by the theatrical switcheroo. On its official website (which remains functional), FYF is described as a “revolutionary, heart-stopping live show” and “not suitable for the faint-hearted. It’s specifically crafted to keep you on tenterhooks. As an audience member, you become a crucial character in the unfolding horror story, right before your eyes.” It also guarantees “an array of goosebump-inducing live show elements will be showcased at Insidious: The Further You Fear, including but not limited to, state-of-the-art special effects, strobe lights, fog, costumes, hair, makeup and much more.
Despite high expectations from those who appreciate costumes, hairstyles, and makeup, as well as an engaging live theater experience, many viewers have been expressing disappointment and frustration. The production quality fell short of the description, leading to a wave of negative reactions on the horror subreddit. One user commented, “There were no jump scares, no interaction, and no real immersion. The timing was off in multiple instances, and it seemed unprofessional. It failed to deliver on its promises.” Another user compared it unfavorably to the infamous Fyre Festival, saying, “This was my own version of the Fyre Festival.
When Intellectual Property Goes Rogue
A common grievance among creative minds in Hollywood is that studios often dismiss innovative concepts unless they are based on previously established intellectual properties (IP). This results in an abundance of sequels, ongoing franchises, and perhaps even a decrease in quality. Although the era where Marvel properties were guaranteed success has passed, studios continue to invest in productions centered around IP. It’s much more appealing to sell a partially developed concept that is connected to something successful rather than a fully-fledged original idea without a proven track record. Examples like “Insidious: The Further You Fear” occasionally manage to slip through.
Blumhouse Productions, known for their work on the “Insidious” movie series and linked with FYF, declined to comment when contacted by WXYZ Detroit following the final performance. Despite the recent spinoff of “Insidious” underperforming, the original franchise remains highly regarded within the genre. At present, the first three “Insidious” films can be streamed on Peacock and Hulu, while “Insidious: The Last Key” is available for rental or purchase. Meanwhile, the latest addition to the series, titled “Insidious: The Red Door,” is currently streaming on Netflix.
