In the debut of CBS’s fresh medical puzzle series titled Watson, the conclusion unveiled an unexpected casting decision for the show’s antagonist. Actor Randall Park, who is typically recognized for his friendly roles, brings a shiver to his performance as he steps into the shoes of the primary villain, Moriarty, in Watson.
In a fresh and contemporary take, the TV series “Watson” draws inspiration from the Sherlock Holmes tales, where Morris Chestnut’s Watson is now employed at a hospital in Philadelphia following the demise of the iconic detective. This show updates the characters of Sherlock Holmes, much like “Elementary” did previously. You can tune in for new episodes every Monday starting February 16, or stream them on Paramount+.
Randall Park Brings a Twist to Moriarty
Towards the conclusion of the initial episode of Watson, Shinwell Johnson boards a streetcar, clutching a briefcase, when an enigmatic individual situated behind him remarks, “I might as well stay here. The view…the city seems so exposed.” As the lens zeroes in on this stranger, it becomes apparent that it’s Moriarty, who was believed to have perished after eliminating Sherlock Holmes. This comment about an exposed city is foreboding, but it carries a deeper chill when it comes from Randall Park, who typically exudes such an upbeat demeanor.
Randall Park usually opts for cheerful and humorous roles over villainous ones. He’s best known for his amusing portrayal of agent Jimmy Woo in Marvel Cinematic Universe shows like “WandaVision”, and as the jovial immigrant father in “Fresh Off the Boat”. Even Shinwell finds it surprising that Randall Park plays Moriarty, expressing, “I was expecting someone… entirely different.
During an interview with USA Today, Park shared his enthusiasm for portraying the notorious Sherlock Holmes antagonist.
It’s noteworthy that I’m often associated with portraying kind-hearted characters. Therefore, receiving the unexpected call was quite a shock. But it was a delightful surprise indeed. To be honest, the thought of embodying a villain is incredibly exciting for me.
In the initial season of Watson, details about Moriarty’s character are subtly revealed through his appearance. As Shinwell hands him a briefcase, viewers catch a glimpse of an unusual condition – his two fingers being fused together, a detail mentioned earlier in the episode. As Moriarty departs, he flashes a smile and gestures towards his shirt bearing the words “Always & Everywhere,” hinting at the sinister influence he exerts over the city.
How This Moriarty Fits ‘Watson’s Aesthetic
Watson is observed working with his medical degree at a hospital instead of assisting Sherlock Holmes in solving criminal cases. Now, rather than unraveling intricate mysteries related to crime, Watson and his colleagues are engaged in deciphering puzzling medical enigmas. The plotline involving Moriarty’s nefarious activities is anticipated to intertwine with the medical field as well. As Shinwell informs Moriarty that the case contains DNA samples, we can expect these samples to play a significant role in Moriarty’s plans. Before receiving the briefcase, Moriarty subtly hints at his intentions when he says, “a germ could carve its name into history here,” suggesting possible use of the samples for malevolent purposes.
In the series “Watson,” Randall Park’s portrayal of Moriarty aligns with the contemporary updates to the classic Sherlock Holmes stories. To put it another way, “Watson” seeks to update the concept of Sherlock Holmes, and Park mirrors this modern vibe. On the tram, for instance, he sports a casual outfit – a white polo, jeans, and sneakers – which were not part of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original character design when Moriarty was first introduced.
The series “Watson” deviates from the usual setting of Sherlock Holmes stories in England. Instead, it is set in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, as mentioned at the beginning of each episode. A significant portion of the first episode unfolds within Holmes Clinic, but one of the most striking Pittsburgh scenes occurs when viewers are introduced to Moriarty. Moriarty and Shinwell are seen riding the Duquesne Incline, a famous Pittsburgh cable car, from which they can appreciate the entire city. Although Moriarty is a villain, it’s hard to argue against his admiration for the city’s stunning beauty.
Who Is Moriarty, According to Sherlock Holmes Lore?
In various Sherlock Holmes adaptations prior to Watson, Moriarty has been portrayed by numerous actors, including Ralph Fiennes, Andrew Scott, and even Orson Welles. His reputation as Holmes’ arch-nemesis has grown with each adaptation since he only appears in two of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original novels.
Moriarty, an astute academic, demonstrated remarkable intellect at a tender age. Contrasting Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty is a formidable adversary, frequently showcasing equal intelligence but utilizing it for nefarious purposes. He orchestrates much of the criminal activity that Holmes and Watson find themselves investigating, operating as the mastermind behind many such schemes.
One captivating aspect of Moriarty being the chief antagonist in the series “Watson” is that Watson has never encountered Moriarty in the original stories. Instead, all that Watson knows about Moriarty comes from Sherlock Holmes’ accounts. This mirrors the TV show, where Watson doesn’t interact with Moriarty either; he only learns of Moriarty’s unique physical trait – two fused fingers. At this point in the story, Watson isn’t even aware that Moriarty is alive. The upcoming season will be intriguing as it unfolds how Watson and Moriarty eventually intersect. Catch it on Paramount+.
