In a fresh chapter of her career, Cameron Diaz has decided to return to acting after a hiatus, set to appear in the 2025 movie “Back in Action”. Fans are thrilled at the prospect of watching their beloved actress again on the big screen. As this new phase for Diaz unfolds, she’s reminiscing about some of her past cinematic triumphs, such as the 1998 romantic comedy “There’s Something About Mary“. Surprisingly, Diaz has shared that a specific scene from this film was what won her over, and I must admit, it wasn’t something I had anticipated.
Which Scene From There’s Something About Mary Did Cameron Diaz Love Early On?
The beloved romantic comedy by directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly revolves around three male characters trying to win over the main female character. The storyline is filled with outrageous antics that are uniquely Farrelly-esque. In a recent interview with Vogue, shared on YouTube, Ms. Diaz reminisced about the film. She mentioned that before she agreed to star in it, she came across a scene description that caused her to “tumble off the bed.” This memorable scene features Matt Dillon’s character, Pat Healy, and W. Earl Brown’s character, Warren Jensen.
When I initially went through the script, it made me laugh so much that I tumbled off my bed. The way they’ve described my brother, Earl, hitting Dillon’s Pat in the throat was just hilarious to me. It seemed so absurdly funny that I couldn’t help but burst out laughing uncontrollably and knew right then and there that I had to be a part of this film.
The incident under discussion features Mary, Warren, and Pat. Unfortunately, Warren, who has developmental issues and is sensitive about his ears being touched, reacts violently to Pat moving one of his headphones. This unexpected action from Warren leaves Pat in a difficult position. While I find this scene startling, it’s understandable that some might find humor in it, especially when considering the context provided by the actor Dennis Quaid in “Any Given Sunday.
There Are Plenty Of Other Funny Scenes In There’s Something About Mary
I have no intention of diminishing Cameron Diaz’s or anyone else’s appreciation for the throat-punch scene. Yet, there are other exceptional moments in the movie that could be considered even more remarkable. For instance, the initial scene featuring a young Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) awkwardly struggling to zip up his fly is quite memorable. Additionally, I find humor in the 7-Minute Abs scene where a hitchhiker proposes an absurd fitness idea to Ted, only for him to dismiss it, leaving the hitchhiker visibly upset.

A memorable moment from the ’90s comedy “There’s Something About Mary” that I still recall vividly is the “hair gel mix-up.” This rather explicit incident unfolds when Ted accidentally leaves a trail of his personal grooming product behind his ear after a private moment. When Mary mistakes this for hair gel and uses it, a part of her hair stands upright, adding an amusing touch to their date. I believe this scene is one of the most iconic in the entire film.
Despite the film being highly popular, it’s surprising that a sequel hasn’t been made yet. However, the Farrelly brothers hinted at a potential follow-up in November 2024, stating they’d be eager to revisit the characters if a suitable idea arises. Interestingly, Cameron Diaz has shown signs of returning to acting more frequently, and she’s even expressed interest in being part of the upcoming sequels for both “The Mask” and “Charlie’s Angels.
No matter what Cameron Diaz chooses for her future projects following her retirement, it’s safe to say that “There’s Something About Mary” will continue as one of her most memorable roles in film. I must admit, the throat-punch scene was a surprising selling point, but I’m delighted they managed to capture her talent on screen with such a pitch-perfect performance.
