Daredevil: Born Again

The highly anticipated “Daredevil: Born Again” marks a significant milestone as it provides Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock with his own series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the immense success of his three seasons on Netflix as Daredevil. The original series was a resounding favorite among fans, introducing key characters such as Karen Page (portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and the formidable Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). While “Born Again” will maintain many beloved elements from the original series, including its gritty atmosphere, Charlie Cox hinted that the new show will also modernize and reinvent certain aspects of the character.

As a devoted movie critic, I recently sat down with Charlie Cox for an exclusive chat about the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series. In our discussion, he shed light on how this new show will set itself apart from the cherished original, while still resonating with long-time fans.

In his words, “The rewrites needed to preserve certain elements of the original show, particularly its tone, which wasn’t being adequately captured.” He went on to explain that one significant change is the darker, more ominous atmosphere that now pervades the series. At times, it delves into the depths of sheer sinister and brutal violence – a setting that truly brings these characters to life.

“It’s six years later!”

Cox elaborated, “However, it doesn’t seem entirely identical.” Despite the fact that Born Again will maintain a similar tone to Daredevil, it is essentially a fresh production with its own unique character. “The rhythm has changed. The persona has evolved.” One of the ways Born Again will usher in a new phase for the character is by introducing a significant time leap. “It’s six years down the line,” he disclosed.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is a “Hybrid” Show

To numerous enthusiasts, the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” is essentially considered an unofficial fourth season of the original show, which concluded in 2018. Actor Charlie Cox described this characterization as partly accurate, referring to “Born Again” as a “hybrid” between Season 4 of “Daredevil“, and Season 1 of the new series. According to Cox, “the reason it feels like a hybrid of a season four and a season one is because there’s been enough time to pass that allows for a reset, and certain things don’t necessarily need to be shown explicitly on screen“. In “Born Again“, we find Matt Murdock once again, dealing with a crisis of faith concerning his role as Daredevil.

It seems Matt is starting to question if he might have overlooked the unintended consequences of his actions, wondering if all his efforts to do good have truly made a difference or if they’ve only created new issues instead.

Matt Murdock has to juggle his dual roles – one as a lawyer helping people legally, and the other as the vigilante known as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. His companions Karen Page and Foggy Nelson are by his side in this endeavor. As stated by Cox, there’s a scene where he negotiates with Kingpin, setting boundaries for their relationship to avoid conflicts. However, Wilson Fisk constantly challenges Murdock’s moral compass throughout the season as explained by Cox.

For the remainder of the season, it appears those two individuals are on a head-on path, constantly testing limits and compelling each other to step over boundaries they’re uncomfortable with.
