Filmmaker Damien Leone hints that the script for “Terrifier 4” is being developed, and this upcoming sequel will offer fans a glimpse into the enigmatic past of Art the Clown, played by David Howard Thornton. Not only will we learn about Art’s origin, but Leone assures us that he won’t hold back on the brutal violence that has come to define the horror franchise. Leone shared this news on social media, expressing appreciation for his fans during his birthday celebration. On X (formerly Twitter), the filmmaker posted:
I really appreciate all your birthday greetings! In return, I’m excited to let you know that the screenplay for Terrifier 4 is being developed, promising an epic, thrilling, gruesome, terrifying, emotional, and utterly fulfilling conclusion. By the way, I will also unveil Art’s origins in this final installment. 😉🤼
Art the Clown, much like a superior vintage, appears to grow more captivating with each passing year. Despite the gruesome carnage and disturbing violence against children in the Terrifier series, particularly in its association with Leone’s horror franchise, these films have managed to win over horror enthusiasts. In fact, the latest addition to the saga, appropriately named Terrifier 3, has been highly praised, earning an impressive “Hot” rating of 85% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, previously known as the audience score.
Why Do the ‘Terrifier’ Films Work So Well?
The confirmation of Terrifier 4 was made public in September 2024, a development that came as no shock to many. This is because the filmmaker Damien Leone and actor David Howard Thornton, who plays Art the Clown, have become widely recognized figures due to the horror franchise’s success. Critics too appear to be on the same page, with the first (62%), second (87%, “Certified Fresh”), and third (78%) films receiving positive reviews on the RT Tomatometer. One possible reason for Leone’s gruesome movies’ popularity is their unflinching depiction of violence and gore.
It’s true that there are many critics online who claim that the Terrifier series prioritizes violence over storytelling, and this may be accurate for the first film, which is essentially a tribute to classic 1980s slasher films. However, Terrifier 2 takes a turn similar to A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors by incorporating more imagination and fantastical elements into its plot. The supernatural aspect could be one reason why the escapades of Art the Clown in his second and third outings have been so popular among viewers. Therefore, it’s not surprising that these films have become significant financial successes.
Just as Nightmare 3 ($45 million) laid the foundation for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master ($49.4 million) to thrive financially, it appears that the Terrifier series has followed a similar pattern. The audience turned out in large numbers for Terrifier 2, and its success paved the way for an impressive box office performance of Leone’s third installment, Terrifier 3, which earned $76.3 million worldwide (according to The Numbers). Compared to Terrifier 2’s more modest earnings of $15.7 million, this is a significant increase in financial success for the series.
Is it possible that Terrifier 4 will stray from the supernatural elements that have made the films successful? Given the series’ unique blend of creative fantasy and horror, it seems unlikely. Moreover, if the films remain financially successful, altering Art the Clown significantly would be counterproductive while he continues to deliver his chilling, must-see performances on screen. Additionally, ending the franchise prematurely might not be advisable.
