A new version of the 1998 science fiction thriller “The Faculty” is currently being developed by Miramax, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Robert Rodriguez, famed director of the original Kevin Williamson-penned horror movie “Scream” featuring Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, and Shawn Hatosy, will take on a producing role in the upcoming remake. Drew Hancock has been tapped to write the new screenplay for this revamped version.
Apart from working on “Companion”, Hancock is also responsible for its screenplay and direction. This upcoming sci-fi thriller, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, will hit theaters this weekend. The movie, which stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, revolves around a peaceful weekend getaway that takes a violent turn.
Or, in a more casual tone:
Hancock isn’t just acting in “Companion”, he’s also behind the scenes as its writer and director. Warner Bros. Pictures will release this sci-fi thriller this weekend. It stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid and follows a weekend trip that goes horribly awry.
In the initial version of “The Faculty,” we find Wood portraying a dual role as both a news editor and film critic. A nurse is brutally killed in this narrative, but it appears she comes back to life. With this peculiar incident piquing his curiosity, our protagonist decides to delve into the strange occurrences taking place.
Rodriguez, an experienced director and series creator, was involved in the original film production alongside Elizabeth Avellan. The creator behind films like “Alita,” “Sin City,” and “Desperado” is responsible for Disney+’s spinoff of “The Mandalorian,” titled “The Book of Boba Fett.” Other notable works under his belt include “El Mariachi” and “From Dusk till Dawn.
Besides kick-starting the popular “Spy Kids” series with the initial movie in 2001, Rodriguez went on to release subsequent films such as “Spy Kids 2: The Lost Dreams Island” (2002), “Spy Kids 3D: Game Over” (2003), and “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World” featuring Jessica Alba and Jeremy Piven (2011). This movie franchise has amassed a whopping $550 million at global box offices.
Under the supervision of BoulderLight, a production company known for nurturing emerging horror directors like Zach Cregger (responsible for “Barbarian”), is set to produce a new version of the film “The Faculty”.
Variety was the first to report on the remake.
