In contrast to the joy Netflix brought to numerous subscribers by unveiling an extensive lineup of movies and series set for 2025, some of its most successful franchises were conspicuously missing from the schedule. The upcoming year will see a comeback of popular franchises such as The Old Guard, Knives Out, Stranger Things, among others, with the latter concluding its run with its final season. However, enthusiasts of Netflix’s newer hits may find themselves waiting until 2026, or even later, for their favorites to make a reappearance on our screens.
During the streamer’s “What’s New on Netflix” event, viewers were surprised to find notable omissions in the 2025 schedule. Many had anticipated the arrival of Guy Ritchie’s series The Gentlemen‘s second season, but it was conspicuously absent. Fans were also expecting the final season of Outer Banks and the second season of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece to debut in 2025, but they did not appear on the schedule.
The following shows were not included: Virgin River Season 7, Bridgerton Season 4, The Lincoln Lawyer, Avatar: The Last Airbender (live-action adaptation) Season 2, Beef, and 3 Body Problem. Some had hoped that Black Doves, Netflix’s latest spy-thriller, might debut in 2025, but given that Season 1 was only released in December, it seems that expectation may have been a bit overly optimistic.
Although some may find the news disappointing, it’s crucial to understand that the decision isn’t final and is subject to change. Delays, reshoots, award considerations, and emerging trends can all influence release dates and schedules. Furthermore, with the last quarter of Netflix’s schedule appearing empty as a result of this announcement, there’s a possibility that some shows could be added to their winter lineup. This is similar to what happened with the final seasons of “Virgin River” and “The Lincoln Lawyer,” which were unexpectedly moved to Netflix’s 2024 winter window, despite not being initially included in the 2024 schedule.
What is Netflix Releasing in 2025?
Don’t worry, as the lack of these specific titles means that other popular Netflix series will step in to take their place in 2025. For instance, the highly anticipated action sequel, The Old Guard 2, is set for release this year, along with the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Furthermore, the final season of Squid Game, a gripping South Korean series, will be released in 2025, paving the way for an upcoming American spin-off by David Fincher. Additionally, the second season of Wednesday, one of Netflix’s most successful shows to date, is expected to return later this year.
Netflix recently announced three exciting movies set to debut in 2025. The first is “Havoc,” an action movie headlined by Tom Hardy, with Gareth Evans (“The Raid”) at the helm. This film will hit screens in the Spring. Additionally, Guillermo del Toro’s next project for Netflix, a highly-anticipated remake of Frankenstein based on Mary Shelley’s novel, is scheduled to premiere in November. Lastly, “RIP,” a crime-thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, will be released in the Fall.
