Shortly following the announcement of its release date, Netflix shared more thrilling news with fans of “The Old Guard 2” – a behind-the-scenes sneak peek. Production on the sequel was completed in late 2022, but encountered some unexpected delays. Now, the highly anticipated film is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 2, 2025. Charlize Theron portrays Andromache of Scythia in “The Old Guard,” a story about a band of immortal mercenaries based on a comic book series written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernández. The sequel will bring back several familiar faces, as well as some new and intriguing characters.
Netflix recently shared exclusive behind-the-scenes clips for the upcoming sequel to “The Old Guard,” showcasing the astounding array of stunts that moviegoers have been eagerly awaiting. In these sneak peeks, star Charlize Theron and other returning cast members are seen participating in intense action sequences. Given her history of doing most of the stunt work herself, it’s no surprise to see Theron continuing this trend. The captivating footage also hints at who else will be joining the fray, with some new characters set to enter “The Old Guard” universe. The sequel is expected to delve into the storyline from “The Old Guard Book Two,” the source material.
In the ensemble of The Old Guard, fresh faces include Henry Golding from Snake Eyes and Uma Thurman, who secured a main role in Dexter: Resurrection. Previous cast members include Kiki Layne as Nile, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the team’s supervisor Copley, and Veronica Ngô reprising her role as Quynh. It is expected that Quynh will have a more substantial part in the sequel. Taking over the directorial role from Gina Prince-Bythewood is Victoria Mahoney, known for Lovecraft Country and Queen Sugar. The screenplay for The Old Guard 2 is penned by comic co-creator Greg Rucka along with Sarah L. Walker (The Twelve).
‘The Old Guard 2’ Has Been a Longtime Coming
In late 2022, production for “The Old Guard 2” finally wrapped up, not long after its predecessor became a hit on Netflix in 2020. Yet, it wasn’t an easy ride. Filming faced several hurdles, such as a fire incident that necessitated a pause before resuming. In post-production, a five-week halt occurred due to a Netflix leadership change, making the finalization of “The Old Guard 2” challenging over the last two years.
At last, viewers can stream the movie on Netflix, nearly three years following its completion of filming. Whether further films of The Old Guard will emerge post-sequel’s Netflix release in July remains uncertain. However, it’s reasonable to assume that the extended wait period may have impacted the franchise negatively. Nonetheless, the initial movie left a lasting impression on critics in 2020, receiving a Certified Fresh 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71% audience approval from Popcornmeter. Additionally, there’s a strong likelihood that cast and crew enjoy working on this franchise, making it easier to reunite for another installment.
