Following a contentious incident involving fellow Best Actress Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres’ supporters, Karla Sofia Gascón has been under scrutiny due to her passionate comments she shared online over various topics, including Islam and the George Floyd case, in recent years.
Emilia Pérez’s posts on the platform previously known as Twitter began circulating around Thursday morning, with numerous users posting screenshots and offering critical commentary on Gascón’s opinions. For instance, shortly after George Floyd was killed in Minnesota in 2020, sparking widespread Black Lives Matter protests, Gascón shared a series of tweets expressing her views.
To clarify, a man is accused of using a fake bill while under the influence of methamphetamine. An overzealous officer responds, leading to his death, causing devastation for the man’s family and colleagues, and turning him into a symbol of resistance. I firmly believe that most people had little concern for George Floyd, an individual with a history of drug use and hustling, but his death has again shed light on the fact that there are those who still view Black people as unworthy of rights and regard the police as murderers. This is all regrettable.
Later that year, she took aim at Muslims in her native Spain.
It seems like you’re curious about the increasing number of Muslims in Spain, as suggested by your observation of more women wearing traditional Islamic attire at your daughter’s school. You posted this on November 23, 2020, and added that with the changing demographic trends, it might be necessary to teach Arabic instead of English in the future.
Concerning Islam, she proposed a restriction: “As long as we don’t prohibit religions that contradict European values and infringe upon human rights – like Islam, within the framework of religious freedom – we won’t resolve part of the significant issue at hand. Religion can mislead those who are deeply devoted to their faith.
Chris Murphy, a contributor at Vanity Fair, expressed his opinion on Gascón’s comments about Floyd by stating, “This is too unbelievable…Please, oh please, don’t give this woman an Academy Award!!!” Gascón achieved historical significance as the first trans actress to be nominated for Best Actress, while her film, directed by Jacques Audiard and produced by Netflix, led the nominations with a total of 13.
Around 10:30 AM this morning, a number of Gascón’s posts began to vanish from the site, including the one about Floyd which had been active earlier. Representatives for both Gascón and Netflix have been contacted by The Hollywood Reporter for comment. It was unexpected that the outspoken actress’s posts were allowed to stay up on the platform given the high-tension awards season competition. As top contenders like Gascón typically have teams of publicists and strategists who specialize in media training and managing public image, many users wondered why the posts remained visible for so long.
This statement comes from an actor renowned for a film with progressive ideals, and yet it’s amusing. Remarks such as these often escape censorship, despite being about Muslims, which is rarely labeled as racially insensitive. Keep in mind that the following are not all examples.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel irked when I see online groups trying to undermine the hard work of creators like Emilia Pérez and her team. In an interview, Gascón pointed out that this seems to be happening in relation to Fernanda Torres and her movie. I’ve never spoken ill of Fernanda or her project; however, it’s clear that some people working with Fernanda are trying to belittle Emilia Pérez and me. This doesn’t help either of us, it just highlights the questionable tactics they’re using for their own work.
After the comments spread widely online, numerous users of X tagged the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, alleging that Gascón’s comments breached Academy rules concerning disparaging remarks towards other nominees. Nevertheless, the Academy found no rules had been broken — Gascón did not criticize or demean Torres’ performance or film; instead, he issued a statement to Variety to clear up the misunderstanding.
Gascón expressed his admiration for Fernanda Torres, stating he’s enjoyed getting to know her over the past few months. In a related note, he mentioned the unfortunate toxicity and hate speech on social media he’s encountered. Fortunately, Fernanda has been a great supporter, and those connected with her have always been encouraging and extremely generous.”

“Gascón stated that he’s a big fan of Fernanda Torres, and he’s enjoyed their recent interactions. He also highlighted the negative aspects of social media, such as toxicity and hate speech, which he’s unfortunately experienced. However, Fernanda has been a valuable ally during this time, and everyone connected with her has been supportive and generous.”

“Gascón shared his appreciation for Fernanda Torres, mentioning their past few months of acquaintance as enjoyable. He also pointed out the unpleasant encounters with toxicity and hate speech on social media platforms. Fortunately, Fernanda has been a reliable ally during these times, and those around her have been supportive and very generous.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase that into:
“Recently, I shared some thoughts with THR about the online hate I face as a transgender actress. I see social media as a distorted reflection; it’s not where the truth lies. The real appreciation comes from people who approach me on the streets to express their gratitude.
