_J.L-A.L_ FW25 Draws Inspiration From a 1970s French Sci-Fi Film

Prior to the release of James Cameron’s Avatar, the animated film La Planète Sauvage (1973) by René Laloux had already depicted blue-skinned alien humanoids known as Draags, who ruled over humans from Earth. This classic science fiction movie served as inspiration for _J.L-A.L_‘s otherworldly FW25 collection, showcased at Paris Fashion Week. The collection boasted new outerwear in collaboration with Goldwin, sneakers from HOKA, and artistic details crafted by Victoria Ohanyan.

Initially, it may seem that the nods to the 1973 film are hard to spot – there are no characters with blue skin or obvious alien features. But a more detailed look reveals connections like the rounded headbands and intricate knitted patterns, which mirror the distinctive attire of the ruling aliens from the movie. Furthermore, bucket bags shaped like pumpkins and beaded accessories echo the native life forms on the fictional planet “Ygam.

Similar to a movie portraying an ancient human culture using classic artwork, this collection doesn’t have a strongly futuristic vibe. Balancing stiff designs such as puffer jackets, windbreakers, and tactical pants are softer materials like laser-cut shearling and brushed wools.

J.L-A.L skillfully replicates the subtle shading seen in the movie using gradient fabric made by Manteco. The gradient effect is most noticeable on a coat that transitions from black to gray, featuring a hidden placket to conceal the fastening. In other pieces, the design elements of the clothing worn by the Draags are elegantly recreated, with duo-toned knitwear showcasing, for instance, a brown sweater adorned with maroon intarsia on the chest, shoulders, and sleeves.

In this design by _J.L-A.L_, the predominant use of grays, browns, and blacks creates an otherworldly ambiance through the architectural construction and textured fabrics of the garments. For instance, a brown cardigan showcases a delicate geometric pattern and diagonal zip fastening, while a wool scarf boasts a crystalline texture with permanent pleats that resemble bouncy crystals.

Alongside new items designed with AI techniques from Goldwin, the collection also features two modern color schemes for HOKA’s Mafate X. Although Victoria Ohanyan’s wooden accents in the collection are modest, they provide a natural counterbalance to _J.L-A.L_’s advanced technological style.
