The eagerly anticipated prequel series of “Legally Blonde,” set for release on Prime Video, is nearly here. Although a younger version of Elle Woods hasn’t been cast yet, original actress and executive producer Reese Witherspoon has expressed great delight with the casting process so far. Announced in May 2024, this prequel series, called “Elle,” delves into Woods’ high school years to reveal the life events that molded her into the beloved character we met in the original “Legally Blonde” movie.
During an interview with people together with Will Ferrell for their upcoming rom-com titled “You’re Cordially Invited“, Reese Witherspoon shared that filming for her new project “Elle” will start in March. However, the actress hasn’t yet decided who will portray the younger version of herself in the movie. “We’re currently going through the casting process and selecting the perfect actor to play the young me,” she said, expressing her excitement while also finding it a bit surreal.
It’s equally thrilling to observe these energetic young women, brimming with eagerness and joy. The challenge lies in making a choice among the numerous talented individuals I encounter.
The search for a youthful counterpart to Elle Woods commenced in September of the previous year, suggesting that the ball is likely rolling towards its end if the prequel series is slated to debut in March. Reese Witherspoon welcomed aspiring talents to submit their audition videos, indicating she wasn’t primarily seeking an established star for the role but rather the perfect fit regardless of their background or experience. On social media, she expressed her eagerness to witness everyone’s unique portrayals of this cherished Gemini vegetarian.
‘Elle’ Will Reveal More than Just Elle Woods’ Origins
It’s clear that Elle will offer fans a glimpse into Woods’ time before attending Harvard. Additionally, Witherspoon hinted at the possibility of exploring the origins of another beloved Legally Blonde character – Bruiser the chihuahua – in the upcoming prequel series. During an interview with People, she casually mentioned, “There might be a story about Bruiser’s origin in it.” When Ferrell playfully suggested a cameo for himself in the series, she didn’t rule it out.
In response, Witherspoon said, “Indeed, you could take on the role of the support animal, as the previous one, a chihuahua, is no longer here.” Ferrell then jokingly asked, “Am I to wear ping pong balls and mimic a chihuahua in some studio using motion capture technology for Elle?” However, they were merely jesting, and it’s not true that Ferrell will be playing Bruiser in the film.
Without a doubt, Elle seems to promise plenty of entertainment for long-term fans of Legally Blonde who have been yearning for more Elle Woods since the debut of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde in 2003. Although a launch date for the prequel series is still unknown, you can revisit all the delight of the initial 2001 movie by renting or buying it on every Video On Demand platform.
