As your faithful ally, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be stepping back into the limelight as “Big Nick” O’Brien for another action-packed adventure in the third installment of the movie series! While nothing is set in stone in Tinseltown, the fact that Danny and O’Shea Jackson Jr. have all but confirmed their return while promoting “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” seemed almost too good to be true. Yet, here we are, less than a month after our record-breaking debut, and the next chapter is officially in the works!
According to Variety, it appears that Lionsgate and Butler’s production company, G-BASE, are considering Christian Gudegast for a return to his dual role as both writer and director for the upcoming installment of the franchise. The specific details aren’t clear yet, but the involvement of the original leads is expected.
The series kicked off in 2018 with “Den of Thieves,” an edge-of-your-seat action thriller where Butler’s character, O’Brien, leads a team from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to thwart a daring plan to rob the Federal Reserve Bank. Despite a seven-year gap, the sequel, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” demonstrated that the franchise remained viable. This time around, “Big Nick” encounters the Panther Mafia and a plot revolving around diamond heists as he follows Donnie (Jackson Jr.) across Europe.
Initially, the first film generated approximately $80 million at the global box office, even though it received mixed opinions from critics. In contrast, the sequel has received better reviews, but it’s only managed to surpass its $40 million budget by a small margin with earnings of $47.4 million so far. Nevertheless, this modest success seems sufficient to trigger another round of thrilling international travels.
What Will ‘Den of Thieves 3’ Be About?
Gudegast’s role as director may not be confirmed yet, but his past remarks about the series indicate that persuading him to take up the director’s seat once more might not require much convincing. During an interview for Den of Thieves 2, he expressed his thoughts on the franchise’s future in the following manner:
From the outset, Butler and I clicked. He’s a robust individual, undeniably masculine, and our rapport was instant. His interest in the type of content I was creating paved the way for our bond, and by the time we worked on Den of Thieves, we had collaborated on several projects. Unfortunately, not all of our joint efforts were brought to fruition, but some did make it to the screen. Additionally, producer Tucker Tooley has previously collaborated with Butler, which further strengthened our working relationship. We are eagerly anticipating more opportunities to work together in the future.
In various conversations, Butler expressed a similar viewpoint and made it clear that he wouldn’t keep fans waiting another seven years for the franchise’s comeback. With things moving forward swiftly, it appears that this promise is on track to be fulfilled, and since development on the sequel has been confirmed, we might anticipate seeing Den of Thieves 3 in cinemas within a couple of years. On the other hand, Den of Thieves 2:Pantera is now available for home viewing from typical VOD platforms.
