Without a doubt, “Legally Blonde” stands out as one of the top movies from the 2000s, thanks to Reese Witherspoon’s side-splitting portrayal of Elle Woods and its countless memorable lines. Being a cultural phenomenon, it has spawned a sequel, a musical version, and now, a prequel series is in development. As we search for the young Elle Woods, Witherspoon has revealed insights about the upcoming streaming show, and it’s Jenna Ortega who seems to be involved.
Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell are joining forces for a fresh comedy titled “You’re Cordially Invited“. During the promotional run-up to the movie, which will become available on Amazon Prime starting this Friday, she shared some thoughts about the upcoming TV series ‘Elle‘ as well.
I recently caught the Wednesday Addams series, reminiscent of the original, and was surprised to see her as a high school student. I found it fascinating, and it sparked an idea – reimagining Elle Woods in high school. I wanted to understand her journey before college, law school, and all those transformative years. Brilliant writers came up with a compelling concept, and now Amazon is bringing that vision to life under the title “Elle.” Now, I’m faced with the task of selecting an actress to portray my younger self in this exciting new project.
In 2022, Netflix’s “Wednesday” created quite a stir when its first season was released, and it continues to captivate audiences. Interestingly enough, it holds the record for being the most-watched debut of any original TV show produced by Netflix. During an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Reese Witherspoon revealed that watching this series sparked her imagination about what Elle Woods from Legally Blonde might have been like in high school, leading her to consider a new project based on the idea.
The show will feature Elle Woods flaunting pink and excelling in her studies during the 1990s. The showrunner is Laura Kittrell, known for producing more than 30 episodes of ‘Insecure’, and Witherspoon is overseeing production via her Hello Sunshine team. At present, they are scouting for a young actress to play Elle Woods. Upon viewing audition tapes for the role of Elle, this is what Witherspoon had to say:
As for these incredible young talents, I’ve grown incredibly fond of each one of them. Their work is nothing short of remarkable, and the transformation from traditional auditions to self-produced videos is truly astounding. They’re not just acting; they’re directing, producing, and even handling the costumes. The videos they create are essentially mini-movies, and they’re nailing it. Now, I find myself in a challenging position, as I have to make a tough decision about who to support.
It seems there’s a fierce battle for the role of the next Elle Woods, and I imagine they faced a similar challenge while casting Wednesday. Undeniably, many on the internet are suggesting Reese Witherspoon’s lookalike daughter as their pick, but it appears she is leaving no stone unturned in her search for the ideal candidate, making the decision a tough one.
The actress who is known for her role in “Big Little Lies” shared that she’s viewed numerous audition videos so far, and it’s been an enjoyable experience to witness the abundance of promising young talent. During her time trying out for “Legally Blonde”, it seems she faced stiff competition from other talented actresses like Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alicia Silverstone, Katherine Heigl, Milla Jovovich, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Christina Applegate – all of whom were reportedly being considered for the role as well.
It’s hard to envision who could possibly fill Reese Witherspoon’s shoes as Elle Woods, but given her remarkable history in the role, she may very well discover the next Elle Woods herself! I am confident that whoever takes on the part will be a flawless fit, just as Jenna Ortega proved to be an ideal replacement for Christina Ricci.
