In this article, you’ll find spoilers for the movie “Companion”. Known primarily from Amazon Prime Video’s superhero series “The Boys”, Jack Quaid, the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, has returned to the horror genre following his role in 2022’s “Scream”. Starting today, you can catch “Companion” in cinemas worldwide. Despite the film’s distinct differences from “Scream”, Jack sees a similarity between his character in “Companion” and the one he played in the slasher movie. He describes Richie and Josh as “two unsure, immature men, just enjoying a beer together”.
Under the guidance of director Drew Hancock in his first full-length film, the movie “Companion” fits snugly within the realm of AI horror. The narrative revolves around Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Quaid), a young couple embarking on a weekend retreat at a secluded mansion owned by wealthy Russian expatriate Sergey (Rupert Friend). Invited by Kat, Sergey’s companion, the group initially includes Iris, who is somewhat socially hesitant but determined to fit in. After the first night, Iris goes for a walk and experiences an event that drastically alters the group’s weekend plans. As the story unfolds, it is later revealed that Iris might not be entirely human – a tantalizing revelation without giving away too much!
In the movie, Quaid brings Josh, Iris’ seemingly perfect boyfriend, to life. Despite appearing flawless, Josh has a hidden agenda – he yearns for his friends to appreciate him. However, there’s an ominous side to Josh, as hinted in his discussion with Digital Spy. As early as the film’s start, you can deduce that Josh is rather insecure, a trait reminiscent of Richie, a role Quaid previously portrayed in Scream, who ultimately emerged as one of the two antagonists in the 2022 slasher.
Richie, in the film, I’m working hard to keep the audience guessing. I want them unsuspecting that I might be the hidden villain. As for Richie, he seems to relish his role as a potential ‘Scream’ killer, overacting wildly on screen. Josh, you’ve probably figured out by the movie’s start that he’s the antagonist. What drew me to this project and made it appealing was the fact that his character wasn’t a typical, scene-stealing villain.
In simpler terms, this character isn’t aware that he’s the antagonist; instead, he’s merely a troubled individual. If the story were different, Josh might have been the hero, while Iris went through her turmoil, but I adore how the villain is portrayed as a human in this narrative. Playing such an insecure character throughout filming required considerable empathy, despite his questionable decisions. Now, it’s satisfying to exclaim, “I can’t stand Josh”!
AI Horror is Becoming a Whole New Subgenre
The newest addition is called “Companion,” and it falls under a horror genre that has been growing in popularity lately. This genre, often referred to as artificial intelligence horror, explores the idea where machines gain consciousness enough to perceive humans as a threat. This concept arises from our near-obsessive curiosity about artificial intelligence, despite the warnings we’ve received from movies. Despite their undeniable benefits in simplifying our lives, one must wonder if our lives are truly improved by AI technology.
Movies similar to “Companion” not only deviate from the conventional plot of “a robot causing harm to humans and violating robotics rules.” Rather, this film imparts a lesson on human empathy, subtly suggesting that we may unwittingly assume the role of the monster in fairy tales. Indeed, Iris being an android, discussions about her worthiness of any human-imposed treatment might expose some questionable aspects of humanity. Ultimately, “Companion” serves to highlight the true antagonist, and Jack Quaid makes it abundantly clear as to who it is.
