Earlier this month, there was news that the long-anticipated remake of Troma Entertainment’s cult hit The Toxic Avenger would finally receive its fitting cinematic release in 2025. Now, we can confirm that it will officially hit theaters on August 29. The film, directed by Macon Blair and featuring stars like Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood (among others), was at risk of being stuck in development hell forever. However, Cineverse stepped in to save the day, pulling it out from the brink of obscurity.
By the specified deadline, “The Toxic Avenger” is set to launch nationwide, marking the start of Labor Day Weekend on August 29th. The exciting twist here is that it will be an unrated version of the film. Last year, Cineverse had a massive success with “Terrifier 3”, another unrated production, which eventually became one of the top-grossing horror films of 2024, raking in close to $90 million at the box office on a budget of only $2 million.
Originating from Lloyd Kaufman in 1984, “The Toxic Avenger” is unquestionably one of the most iconic cult classics to emerge during that decade, leading to a series of subsequent films. The reboot premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023 and follows the path set by its predecessor in terms of storyline, with some minor adjustments made to cater to a contemporary audience’s preference for fresh perspectives.
Taking place in a fantastical setting, the story revolves around Winston Gooze (Dinklage), a janitor who undergoes a strange occurrence that turns him into a mutant vigilante called Toxie. Equipped with his trusty mop, this unconventional hero fights against misfits, criminals, and corrupt business leaders. Amidst all the chaos, he strives to reconnect with his son and preserve their relationship.
Macon Blair Says ‘The Toxic Avenger’ Is Better With a Crowd
Despite initial concerns that The Toxic Avenger might never make it to screens due to its provocative content, causing distributors to shy away, Cineverse’s recent acquisition ensures fans will finally witness the uncut version of Toxie. The film has garnered a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from a select group of critics who had the chance to review it in 2023. Richard Fink, MovieWeb’s critic, commented that it “successfully combines horror, humor, and genuinely uplifting superheroics, making it an experience best enjoyed among fellow movie enthusiasts craving a nostalgic throwback to classic B-movies typically found in video stores.
Blair shared similar thoughts when Cineverse acquired “The Toxic Avenger” a couple of weeks back. In a statement, he expressed excitement that people would get to watch this in theaters, saying it’s a lively, entertaining film best enjoyed with a crowd. Additionally, he mentioned:
Our aim has consistently been to maintain the essence and the nostalgia that the original Toxie holds for me (a memory deeply ingrained since my childhood), while creating a production that Troma enthusiasts would appreciate. Simultaneously, we wanted to breathe new life into this character, offering something unique yet familiar.
On August 29, 2025, head to cinemas everywhere for the new release of “The Toxic Avenger”. For those who want to reminisce about the 1984 original’s fun, it can be streamed on various platforms such as Tubi, Peacock, Pluto TV, and Amazon Prime Video.
