Precious Okoyomon’s Lush Dreamscapes Land in Kunsthaus Bregenz

In the intersection of art, poetry, and theater, Precious Okoyomon delves into the intricate relationship between play, disorder, and renewal. They rose to prominence after their appearance at the 2022 Venice Biennale, where they transformed the Arsenale into a vast, verdant ecosystem, merging natural currents with Afro-futuristic concepts. Now, Okoyomon is transporting their creative realms to Austria with “ONE EITHER LOVES ONESELF OR KNOWS ONESELF“, a solo exhibition displaying new pieces, at Kunsthaus Bregenz.

The exhibition, using numerous large-scale displays, metamorphoses the museum into a surreal landscape. Rooms that mimic psychoanalytic offices are filled with playful and naughty demons instead, while a floating mass of plush toys represents private longings and apprehensions. The artist fearlessly addresses these themes, inviting spectators to delve into the power found in gentleness.

Displayed pieces encompass such works as “in the belly of the sun endless ” (2025), which features a gigantic teddy bear deserted near the border of a lush pink rug. This bear, with tear-drop shaped eyes and hearts on its paws, creates an anxious expression that stirs feelings of “daydreaming” and self-forgetfulness, thereby generating a trance-like ambiance. On the upper level, a glass-encased garden is home to caterpillars in the process of pupation and butterflies taking flight, providing a peaceful, earthy respite.

Outside the garden, Okoyomon unveils their newest production, “skysong” (2025), in which they are depicted soaring a plane over the Hudson River while reciting poetry to the heavens. The museum described the visuals as evoking a sense of boundlessness and freedom, with an ego that perceives both objects and life as sources of spiritual motivation. However, the audience is confined to observe from behind a wire fence, much like butterflies trapped within it.

ONE EITHER LOVES ONESELF OR KNOWS ONESELF is now on view until May 25, 2025.
